Is anyone else bothered by the possible loss of the Archives building? Seems to have skated without much attention.

Officials launch renovation of Global Center for Medical Innovation

Officials gathered Tuesday to launch the renovation of a new center that will facilitate marketing and development of medical devices.

U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development John Fernandez joined people with Georgia Tech and other organizations for a kick-off event on Aug. 2.

The center will be housed in an existing 12,000-square-foot facility at 755 14th Street in Midtown.

The Global Center for Medical Innovation will be the first of its kind in the Southeast. The facility will foster next-generation medical devices and technology used in universities, hospitals, companies and other places.

Georgia Tech, Piedmont Hospital, Saint Joseph’s Translational Research Institute and the Georgia Research Alliance are partners on the project, which has been awarded $3.6 million in federal and state grants.

The center should open by the end of the year.

Sounds like you work for the city.

I hope they can find another use for that building. It's an Atlanta icon that I remember from my earliest years living here.

I don't...just don't care. It's a building, it's not like it's a pyramid.

There are plenty of reasons to keep it and only one to tear it down... Money. I say find a way to repurpose it. It's a nice piece of real estate fronting what will be a large park stretching from the state capitol to oakland cemetery. Maybe it could be a state museum or something? I love the projection screen idea and think it would be a great way to generate money by selling advertising space that could perhaps help pay for renovations. Just a thought...

ISTR the main reason they had to move the archives was because the foundation of the building was compromised and would have cost more to fix than to build something new. Of course, I can't find the article which I think I recall

No. Merely a thoughtful way of generating revenue without incurring a lot of unnecessary costs... It could display advertisments for the high museum, or the fox, or the carter center, or fernbank for all I care (if youre against corporate sponsorships or something) but it would, at the very least, bring more awareness to the building itself and in doing so might raise more money to help preserve it.

The GT coliseum had been completely gutted and the exterior facade removed, leaving steel structural elements exposed to the street. Why does roadwork on Tech campus never end? Why does every little 0.25 acre green space on campus need to be redesigned, torn up and rebuilt every year? Haha, I know why

Anyone know what the construction on Juniper is for?

I know. Luckily, most of the larger construction projects are about to wrap up. The new CULC building is pretty much done, along with the new Tech Green and Tech Walkway. Campus is going to be so much nicer this year now that construction fences will be coming down.

Demolition

So, they finally demo'd the old two-story houses on West Peachtree and 13th...is this in preparation for new construction?

Additionally, I'm trying to get some info on the project happening over on Huff Rd. next to Westside Provisions. If anyone has a line in, it's time to spill the beans.

The view from the CULC looks amazing. I can't wait to check it out for myself.

Is anyone subscribed to Atlanta business chronicle, I just want to find out more information about the building like when construction is expected to start, and on average how many floors/ how tall is a 430,000 square foot building.
Thanks

It will probably be between 16 to 20 floors and will look similar to this building.
