I'm sure it's been answered before, and I'm sorry if it has, but I can't go through nearly 100 pages looking for an answer.
Why are the diamonds on the top so uneven? All the sides look like different lengths and they all look like they are at slightly different angles. Was there a reason for this? Or are they straight and I'm just crazy?

They are to create a wedge of light on the World Trade Center Memorial during the fall months. When the setting sun hits it two beams of light will hit the area where the Twin Towers once stood.

All you need to do is look at the angles to see that's not right. There's no way they could reflect or direct light to the memorial that close to the tower at this latitude. I'm not sure if you'll even be able to see the top surfaces from the old footprints.
Besides, the sun would have to be in the north for it to happen.

I think the shape of the foot print is more about fitting the building into the oddly shaped block it will sit on in a way that Foster finds aesthetically pleasing. Also, reducing bulk. This is a FAT tower, and any step that will reduce the visual impact of said bulk was taken.

This is due to the shape of the building itself, which is six-sided. If you look at STR's last render (props due ya mon ), you should notice this, as it is rather subtle. As you look at the tower from increasingly sharper-angled vantage points, this "hex" shape becomes more "exaggerated". It's the same principle that explains why, when you look at a suspension bridge in the same way, the roadway arches up more. In a word: perspective.
Hence, the diamonds look uneven. If 200G had the usual "crackerbox" design that most folks here seem to despise quite much, the diamonds would look parallel to one another.

Covering up the bottom of a bird cage, because none of the things in that drawing are going to happen

Thanks guys. Especially STR for this render:

That really shows where the problem in my mind was. I had just assumed that the base of the building was a square. The fact that the bottom isn't straight answers that question for me.

I really like the roof myself. At some points it's completely ordered and in-line, others it's chaotic, but not entirely. As if there's some kind of underlying order, like something organic. It actually reminds me of a flower.

Didn't noticed that new steel, it looks above B1 (El. 296').

NY hotel sues over ground zero construction noise

By JENNIFER PELTZ
Aug. 5, 2011

The "defendants' failure to take any steps to mitigate the construction noise is not simply unneighborly, but also violates their obligations" to abide by an environmental study that called for avoiding late-night noise and taking steps to muffle it, hotel owner CDL New York LLC says in the suit.

Silverstein Properties, a developer that is working on part of the site and named in the suit, says its work is done during regular business hours, not at night.

"Silverstein Properties is committed to being a good neighbor in the downtown community. Everything we do adheres to applicable codes," spokesman Bud Perrone said. Silverstein is currently building an office tower and the bases of two others along the Trade Center site's east side, nearest the hotel.

Then find yourself another part of town to do business in, if you can. Or build a big-— plastic bubble around your rinky-dink establishment. Or give your occupants ear muffs and Ambien CR so they can sleep better during the day.

Or better yet, help your spokespeople find and/or grow a set big enough to flip off the NIMBYs who suborn your histrionic indignation.

Diagonal beams

What is the story / reason for the diagonal beams at the upper right center of the photo?

Picture clipped from gzrobotic1 a few minutes ago. Note the vertical column being placed right now.!

Those are the apex trusses that spread the above load of the tower, over the underground vehicle access road two floors below (One floor under the concrete deck shown and 3 floors below the apex of the trusses.) The access road leads to 1WTC parking and loading docks.

They gave the occupants ear muffs and they even put noise screens on the windows yet in the end everything is about the money.
