Temporary sewage bypass along lake may be an eyesore, but won’t smell

Saw these out there yesterday, was wondering what it was all about......

Two above-ground sewer pipes will adorn the shores of Lady Bird Lake and the popular Pfluger footbridge near North Lamar Boulevard over the next month, part of a temporary bypass as the City of Austin repairs a wastewater main line beneath West Cesar Chavez Street.

The two 18-inch plastic pipes are already in place on bridge, sitting side by side on the east edge behind orange fencing. They will be connected in the next couple of days and should have sewage running through them before the weekend, the city says.

The temporary above-ground lines will run from approximately the corner of San Antonio Street and West Cesar Chavez, along the north side of West Cesar Chavez to Shoal Creek, pass under the road and the running trail (via a short tunnel that will be dug overnight), then west along the lake to the Pfluger Bridge. It will then ascend to the bridge, supported by scaffolding.

On the south side of the bridge, the pipes will turn east, run along the lake briefly before crossing Bouldin Creek north of Riverside Drive, then be diverted down a manhole into an existing sewer main on the west edge of Butler Park.
