Thanks for that really nice update!
It's awesome to see how the growth became truly visible and so fast during the last year (compared to the year from 2009 to 2010).

It's funny you say that... I'm sure that is most people's opinion and mostly true... But when you look at the 2006 aerial shot and think how much work it would have taken just to get to that point. To get from the jumbled mess on 9/12 to even just that preparation stage... You realize what a monumental undertaking this really was.

For instance: It appears they had built a temporary PATH station where 2WTC and the new PATH is being built now and then since then have moved the temporary station over to Vesey street. I didn't even know that went on.

Just think of the amount of planning, construction, assembly/dis-assembly all that would have taken! And that was only for something that was temporary.

Amazing!

When I was on my tour of the site last week the guide mentioned that the original world trade center project from its conception to its full implementation took approximately 50 years and the actual construction took over 20 years with the main towers starting in the 1960s and the former Tower #7 reaching completion in 1987.

Eh...not sure I'd put it that way. The idea of a WTC started gaining momentum in the 50's, though there had been less-thought-out ideas for permanent exposition space in other parts of NYC. Something like the Merchandise Mart in Chicago. Planning for what would become the Twin Towers commenced around 1960, with the design phase running from 1960 to about 1964, and continuous construction lasting until 1975 with the completion of 4 World Trade Center and the opening of the full concourse.

There was a lull for a few years until ~1979 when preparations were made for the Vista hotel, which was constructed to a different, larger SOM design, rather than the original Yamasaki design. At that point the Trade Center was considered complete.

They did build-in extra support for an office tower at the 7 site, but there wasn't any serious planning beyond general size and scope. No actual design was envisioned, so it didn't even get to the level of planning the new 5WTC reached. It was much later, in the 80's, when the Port Authority (after finally, mostly filling up the WTC offices with paying tenants) sold the development rights to Silverstein Properties, who then built the Emery Roth designed Tower 7.

There wasn't a single long period of construction, and it took about 40 years from initial concrete planning to top out of 7WTC, but your guide got the general perception right: it was a long, expensive and complex road to completion. Just as tortured as the current complex, complete with years of drama. I personally recommend THIS BOOK if you want the whole story in detail.

It puts things in context, and makes you realize that the 2nd time around was actually pretty quick, if not smooth, all things considered. Only 15 years from scratch to completion, and the new WTC is actually bigger and more complex than the old one.

i know what you mean but i think the WFC worked well with the original twins as it will with the new WTC. I think the towers need/needed buildings reaching upwards towards them rather than just the Hudson River then BAM! two 110 story massive buildings sticking up

Yeah I agree. As nice buildings as they are, I don't like where they are. I like pictures showing that open space- they should have made it one huge park lol. But hey, an apartment there somewhere would be nice. But I guess the WFC is here to stay, and Only a computer rendering could show the new WTC without battery park city and the WFC.

There are a ton of apartments near the WFC.
