What I meant was that project is not really a 'downtown Vancouver' building, but rather more of an infill or 'general Vancouver' project that happens to be downtown.

Also, a concrete truck was on site and work appears to have resumed on the Paris Annex beside Save on Meats. I tried their take-out counter today; good cheap food and awesome service. They were serving a DTES woman in rough shape with every bit as much courtesy and professionalism as myself and others. Pure class.

I thought I heard colleagues state that the lower path was opened up earlier this week but your pics still show a piece of fencing in the way. Looks like there is a partial pathway now there at least.

I walked by Paris Annex this evening and can confirm the ground floor was poured. Looks like they've restarted, really looking forward to seeing it completed, quality area specific infills are probably my favorite type of development.

Even I am surprised at how Hastings East of Abbott is starting to develop. The Acme Cafe is always busy, Save On Meets is looking great and it's nice to see Paris Annex starting again.

Shame about the huge empty development site across the street. I wish Concord try and develop the Greenwich project there. It would totally transform that part of Hastings. Unfortunately I think the activists may have won this battle though.

Anyone have any info on the site on the North/East corner of Hastings/Abbott opposite the TD? It's sat there doing nothing for a couple of years now.

The NE corner of Abbott and Hasting was sold not to long ago, it's being used as a staging area for 60 W Cordova after which it's safe to assume it will be redeveloped by the new owner.

I agree completely with you about Greenwich, a real shame Concord didn't have the fortitude to see the project thru and is now trying to pawn it off to the city instead. We both know what will get built there if that happens is not going to be the same as what Concord had proposed.

Good news! 999 Seymour should be a good addition to that corner. Here's a render from Townline's website - nice looking curtain wall. I recall that these units had odd outside/inside balconies the first time around - I wonder if that's been changed?

No not according to the sales flyer I received from Townline. The majority of the suites in the tower face south but since there is no air-conditioning they have very deep balconies that act as an outdoor living room with fireplaces, flush sliding doors tracks and perforated moveable metal screens to help mitigate the sun. I was at the original presentation centre years back and it looked very clean and modern but not for everybody.

absolutely fantastic news!!! i remember something about these units mostly being studios with partition options. and wasn't that balcony vision somewhat controversial?

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet:

BC Hydro to take down banged-up H-frames

Since the 1940s, Vancouver's ubiquitous H-frame power poles have been a gritty fixture in downtown back lanes.

Banged up by garbage and delivery trucks, blackened by the soot of coal furnaces now long gone and towered over by skyscrapers they were never meant to service, the H-frames are the electrical lifeline to thousands of businesses and homes.

Soon the poles with their elevated transformers and hundreds of kilometres of power lines will be a thing of the past.

Over the next five years, BC Hydro will remove 350 of the frames and install services underground. The $75-million retrofit will improve the reliability of BC Hydro's distribution system.

This reminds me that I noticed some surveyors working around the parking lot at 23 W Pender earlier this week.

This is the area north of the 'china gate' on Pender @ Taylor.

A part of me will be sad to see them go. They gave downtown alleys a very unique, old school, gritty look and are very Vancouver, very Gastown, very northwest urban pioneer. I especially love photographs of our downtown alleys. They have an art and gravitas about them. The alleys might gain a little more superficial beauty, but they will also lose a little bit of funk and a little bit of soul.
