Any way you slice it, this development is tacky and it's going to look like sh*t. But that entire part of South Philly looks like that anyway so it should blend in. If this were getting built on Market Street, THEN people would have a problem.

It's a sporting complex. You can't expect to see class and great architecture in that environment, so just enjoy it for what it will become: A fun place to act like a douche about Philly sports after winning many, many games to come.

Exactly.

Very rarely are such projects meant to be anything spectacular from a design standpoint. Nothing surrounded by a moat of asphalt is meant to be appreciated for its aesthetics.

But in a city with the urban heritage of Philadlephia thats where the planning committee, city council, even the mayor have to work hand- in- hand with the owners of the Sixers,Flyers,Phillies,Eagles and talk to them about building something phenomenal in the stadium district. There should be a planned grid with a mix of restaurants, hotels,condos,apts etc..

Look at the deep pockets that is involved down there. A sports bar is pretty underwhelming and pathetic.

Well here it is the long awaited update to the Temple GD thread. All Projects are humming along nicely and there are roughly 30 houses/ duplexes being developed in the adjacent neighborhood. The highrise at the Norris Street homes has also been completely demolished and work has started on its replacement.

Drexel University's next "campus master plan" will shift the school's focus on expansion away from West Philly and toward Center City.

"North traditionally was where Drexel expanded, up to Powelton Avenue," the school's new president, John Fry, said Monday, through West Philly blocks now crammed with student rentals.

Now Fry wants to redevelop parts of Drexel's "core," including the orange-brick buildings that still give parts of the campus a 1960s feel, and expand east toward the Amtrak yards and the old office buildings between Drexel and the Schuylkill.

"If you could pick a better location than the neighborhood around 30th Street Station, I'd like to hear about it," said Fry, as we spoke in his Chestnut Street office. "A lot of very interesting properties are there."

Drexel moves east in $22 million campus expansion deal

Drexel University has spent $21.8 million to buy 3.6 acres on the north side of the 3000 block of John F. Kennedy Boulevard, between the school's West Philadelphia campus and 30th Street Station.

The purchase of the land from a group of California investors, currently operated as the Five Star asphalt parking lot, will allow Drexel to add academic classroom and research, and commerical office, retail and residential developments with "24 hour" uses at the school's eastern end, helping link the campus to Center City, university president John Fry told me.

Fry says he's begun approaching developers, including Brandywine Realty Trust, which built the neighboring Cira office tower in the mid-2000s, about possible projects. Drexel trustees are drafting a master plan for the campus that would include the site. He credited former trustee chairman George Ross with the previous purchase of the nearby Evening Bulletin building south of the Five Star purchase. Fry also said he's talking to Amtrak about possible expansion over the nearby train yards.

Drexel is the latest West Philly institution to expand toward Center City. See previous plans by Penn and CHOP.

Does anyone have any recent pics? Why does no one care about this project? Probably one of the better projects underway right now that will benefit the masses. Sure beats a sterile office building or condo.

It's been completed since spring of this year, and the new expansion has been open for conventions and meetings for the past 4 months or so...and it's been getting rave reviews, with conventions booking it for return visits down the road.

It's been so popular, the nearby historic Reading Terminal Market has been overrun by conventioneers wanting local and Amish food and gifts so that they're now putting in expansion for that market to accommodate demand growth.

Now THAT is an answer. Thank you very much for the information; it was a pleasure to read and it put a smile on face to learn that this has been so successful right out of the gate. I love Reading Terminal Market, and I'm so happy to hear that it's thriving, renovating, and pondering options for potential expansions. I've always thought that one idea for changing/fixing/demolishing the Gallery was to create a pedestrian mall where the Reading Terminal Market could stretch it wings in the summer. That's something I'd love to see...A bit off topic. Great, great news. Thanks again.

P.S. If anyone has any final completion photos to cap off this thread, I'd love to see them!
