I got the feeling talking to a Safeway manager once that the company has an attachment to these vintage stores, and that it's been agonizing a bit over how to modernize them. A tiny little part of me will be sad when it's been renovated.

Wait until you see the plans. I have a feeling they will stick with the current architecture. Hopefully the refurbish the neon sign as well!

That's my neighbourhood Safeway, and all I hope is that they make some improvements to the parking lot, (landscaping trees etc), The building is a classic. I would really like to see the two parking lot entrances on 13th either eliminated or combined into one at mid-block. The number of near misses of pedestrian, cyclist, and car accidents I have seen or been a party to at those entrances is significant. I wouldn't be fussed if they took over the hair salon to expand the building a bit, but the bagel place and the Laundry-mat are important neighbourhood institutions.

Well I do know that Safeway bought the entire building, so I suspect they want to use the entire space. I've probably seen you there. It seems like I'm there everyday! Lol

I'm just glad they aren't abandoning it in favour of a new store in one of the big box parks like so many other downtown grocery stores. A walkable supermarket is essential to maintaining a neighborhood feel - like the safeway in Kensington/Sunnyside in Calgary.

It would be nice to see someone develop on that safeway's parking lot. Some buildings (canterbury style) with retail on main & condo's/rentals on top facing 13th & the other two respective streets that would cover up the parking lot would add alot more life to the cathedral neighbourhood, along with some good landscaping. As it is our "unique" area in town, some more bars/restaurants/patios/retail/residentail would add more density & be totally awesome.

I'm not a fan of parking lots, but to be honest I find that that one is fairly appropriately sized. During their peak times of the day they can see a significant portion of the lot full. It's not like those big box areas where a significant portion of the parking lot is only used only around Christmas shopping season. Building something in the lot would probably be a bad idea.

I agree with you. The parking lot is right-sized and in my opinion creates a nice 'open' space in the area. There isn't enough space for new a new building -and the parking it would need- on this relatively small parking lot. But I am happy to hear that the Safeway store will get reno'd. It is also my closest grocery store and it sure needs a facelift, but keeping with the retro design.

I fully agree, I find that parking lot a little small even. Some days when I go there I can't even find a parking spot. I had to park on 14th and walk over one day because every single parking space was taken.

Does anyone know what is happening on the top floor of the Regina Inn? They've been taking the balcony railings off.

It looks like a big project. They are taking off the concrete railings shown in these photos. Stuart Olson Dominion has signs up. It is not clear what will replace the old railings but it will probably drasticly change the look of the exterior.

From the manager of the Regina Inn posted on Tripadvisor:

Frankly, that will be a shame if the distinctive "zig-zag" look of the balconies is lost. The Regina Inn is kind of a landmark.
