Very nice.

Hopefully more new buildings will integrate some sort of lighting feature like this.

It seems as though they are. Off the top of my head, Shaw, Melville and hermitage all have some sort of decorative lighting. Hopefully the trend continues.

Here's the best I could get without a tripod. The red horizontal bars on the left is the taller tower.

Lintels is a term generally used to describe the underside of any overhanging architectural feature. Kind of like a soffit.

A healthy mix of both is nice... I prefer wash lighting to highlight features more, but LED has its place too. Or you could do like the CN Tower and combine the two.

Actually, leftcoaster what you have described sounds more like a cornice.

A lintel is the horizontal cross member above an opening. Picture a red brick building with granite pieces above each window (like in Gastown) the granite piece is the lintel.

Now I’m not sure what ColdRSX was referring to with lighted lintels??

Technically you are correct... what i was saying is that generall all three terms are used interchangably (cornice soffit and lintel), which I imagine is what Cold was getting at.

If you check the link I posted originally it will show the exact definition and origins of lintel.

Lintel - lintel can be a load-bearing building component, a decorative architectural element.

What I meant was more to use forms that created lintels as you go up in a decorative and offset manner, than imbed lights into them for wash lighting.

Towering lighting display brightens Vancouver skyline

Kate Webb Jul 12, 2011 20:50:31 PM

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - There's a colourful new display lighting up the Vancouver skyline, and it's being billed as the city's largest lighting feature.

The computerized lighting installation extends 120 metres up the concrete face of the west tower of a posh new Coal Harbour condo development called West Pender Place, and 30 metres up the east building.

Dutch lighting artist Tamar Frank was selected to create the unique work by a jury in an international competition. Developer Reliance Properties spent its entire $400,000 budget for public art - a budget required by the city - on the two vertical columns of light.

"I work a lot with architecture and light and public places and public environments," explains Frank, who used over 600 light-emitting diodes - or LED lights - to complete the installation.

"This is my biggest commission to date, so for me it's really exciting."

The lighting feature took two years to design and implement, and the lights are expected to glow at full brightness for 10 years.

Frank designed 40 different pre-set colour combinations to ensure the lighting design changes gradually several times an hour. Though it will stay on day and night, she says the best time to see it this time of year is after 9:30 p.m.

That is my worry too, but it is such an amazing lighting feature!!!

This is what i have been wanting to see for a looong time here!

Again, would love such effects on the Sears building.....especially on the Granville / Robson sides....

Retro fit these lights on all the residential towers in downtown and our night time skyline would look crazy. I'm not sure if it would be a good crazy or a bad crazy though.
