Hogan2, you didn't hear it from me same as I didn't hear it from a friend, that the Town might be trying to start a small industrial park in that property (between Valleyfield Rd and Wood Islands Rd) and this might be a bit of a kickstart. I'm not sure, but that would be the best explanation... we need the jobs!

I always thought that would be a great place for a gas station, with a tims drive though, as well as a dairy queen along vallyfield road with some apartment buildings in back, being that close to the rink, school and pool, residental/ maybe even a hotel would be better, they should push for industrial in the same area as Montague tire, though i doubt they would get tax revenue from that location.

Dominion Building renos underway

Construction is underway to convert the old Dominion Building in Charlottetown into a high-end apartment complex.

Workers have been knocking down walls in the 53,645-square metre building for the past five weeks, says project developer George Ramia.

Ramia hopes the apartments will be ready for occupancy by early 2012.

Plans call for about 60 two-bedroom units, five one-bedroom units with dens and another five one-bedroom units.

The apartments will be on the second thru six floors in the building that occupies a city block bordered by Queen, Richmond, Pownal and Sydney streets in the capital city’s downtown core.

Ramia says the first floor will be commercial space.

He has said there will be plenty of parking, perhaps in the range of 140 to 160 spots. The goal is also to maintain the current look of the building while keeping it as environmentally friendly as possible.

Good ideas, hogan2! Sorry I didn't respond sooner, summer vacation was too tempting to flick on the old computer.

I think either the new roundabout area or on the other corner as the liquor store would be a great spot for a gas station, and adding a Tim's would be awesome as well. Residential would be great too, people would love living that close to sports facilities and the newest high school on PEI! When a hotel comes (back) to Montague, I think downtown near the river would be the place to go. Although, if we ever got a second hotel, that would be a perfect spot especially for tournaments, with CFWC and the soccer complex only steps away. And as for industrial, either central Brudenell or the already somewhat industrial Commercial Cross would be the best areas for growth. Hopefully this can happen!

Residents move into new Charlotte Court seniors facilities

Charlotte Court seniors housing in Charlottetown has been a flurry of activity over the past week while seniors move into the new facilities built in partnership with APM, Killam Properties and the P.E.I. government.

Tenants relations officer Wade Mahar’s mandate is acting as the liaison between the builders and the seniors. He has described the experience as ‘painless’.

“The facility is such an update that everybody across P.E.I. who is a senior will want in,” he said.

“Our tenants went from living in a very poor facility to a beautiful complex. The seniors do like it and are very happy to get more space and room for their grandchildren to visit.”

Some seniors echo Mahar’s sentiments.

Mary Doiron and her husband Joe see moving into the finished Charlotte Court as welcome ending to temporary housing. Her severe arthritis makes it hard for her to live in an apartment with turn-knob doors or high cabinets.

Her new apartment is barrier-free, making it easier for her to live her day-to-day life.

“The move went fairly well for us,” said Mary. “My husband and I… we had no problems with anybody. It’s been all laid out and told a thousand times. There were no problems with the move.”

Some of Mary’s grandchildren came over from New Brunswick to help her relocate. Now that she and Joe are in a larger apartment, they can come over more often.

“They came over to visit me from New Brunswick… you’d never be able to have them (at the old Charlotte Court residence). It was a closet, very small living room. And there’s a tree growing on top of it.”

Down the hall from the Doirons, Roma and Hudson Jenkins are putting the finishing touches on their own apartment.

“I like the apartments...it’s beautiful. I love the wood floors.”

Some Eastern construction news:

-Garden of the Gulf Museum storage building is under construction off Sullivan Drive in Montague
-Quite a few new houses under construction in Brudenell and Lower Montague
-New seniors' housing and community centre underway in Vernon River
-Medical centre plaza about to open in Murray River
-A few duplexes and houses going up in Souris, on East Main
-Georgetown tourist development with craft shop, tea room etc. is nearing completion

All in all, a pretty good summer for construction!

Vernon Rivers apartment building is all but done, as well as a new restaurant done the road from it and a new Hall being built by the church in vernon river.

Does braymondg live in Charlottetown? The Tweels who own this building and the ones who own the buildings by the Metor Credit are not the same family. The ones by Metro Credit are Mitch Tweel the city counselors family. The two families may have the same name but they are not related .

Ya! I live in Charlottetown. Regardless of what families, both premises are eyesores. In fact, I haven't seen too much care in any Tweel establishments of late.

Touring down University Ave yesterday, I see the city has been it slack self as usual. Maybe they should declare the University/Kent building a designated historic site; it's been empty and dilapidated long enough. Broken windows, doors covering window openings, facade ready to come off the front, etc. It appears that the building should have been condemned ages ago and the city just lets it sit there. I can only surmise it's has to do with a cozy city/Tweel connection.

The amount of projects in 2011 in Summerside is crazy! We have had the new Hyundai dealership build, a Kia dealership came into an existing building, there is the new Summerset Manor, plus a 3 story seniors apartment building on that site. There is 3-4 other residential projects including a townhouse style condo development on the water front, a sustainable housing government project, and 3 more good sized "mid-upper class style" townhouse developments. I've been trying to get pics but i'm a procrastinator lol.

It's going to be the artefact storage for the Garden of the Gulf Museum. It was originally going to be built behind Town Hall, but for some reason they changed it. How do I know this? By being a nosy library-goer!

Yes! That's it. I was surprised to see it cause Valvoline is pretty big in the states. It certainly brightens up the area though.
