Man, the view of this thing from the boardwalk is going to be nice. And yes, this tower is going to absolutely dominate the eastern side of downtown. The view of it coming from either direction on I-35 will be major. From the south it'll likely block a good bit of the view as it near it at river. From the north on I-35 the view will be amazing, because as you come south the tower will rise right in front of you, although, from that angle it'll be behind the Hilton about 4 blocks farther south.

I'm reeling from this epic week. What do we think the orientation of this rendering is? Looking south on Red River with Waller Creek in the foreground I suspect. I wonder what will become of that dilapidated old house between this site and Moonshine.

Wow, what a couple of weeks can do set off the euphoria again. We got so used to it for about 4 - 5 years, a crane free skyline was refreshing.

51 floors, according to Kevin's count. The Austonian is 56 floors at 683'. So 650' at minimum to the roof is a safe bet. Given that this thing has a spire that looks to rise about a quarter more than the building, I'd say it's a safe bet to state that this building will be at least 800 feet - I.E. a new tallest.

I'm not sure about 650' to the roof...the austonian is 621' at the 55th floor at the base of the crown...so using the same floor heights (11.29ft)...that would put the new tower in the neighborhood of 575', not counting the spire.

either way its exciting news... hopefully this new tower will get them to rethink the design of the marriott, since they will be in direct competition

Hmm. Perhaps around 575 plus another 125 feet. So, 700 feet then?

No. Shit.

The design of that goddamn Marriott is awful.

I was expecting another boom sometime this decade, albeit on a smaller scale than 2006-2010. What I didn't expect was for it to pick back up so quickly and with projects this large.

No doubt F1 has plenty to do with the slew of hotel proposals. I am not worried about a saturated market. Austin has long been in need of several thousand additional rooms downtown. Every event Austin host has been getting bigger, or receiving more media attention. We are playing catch-up rather than getting ahead of ourselves.

Does the rendering of the hotel show a skybridge over Red River Street to the convention center or am I chasing shadows? If so, I would have to protest.

I think you are right. Why would you protest such a bridge?

A lot of people think sky bridges and tunnels (like Houston) prevent an active street life. But I for one appreciate the convenience and comfort of them because it's so damn HOT here for so much of the year. I have also spent a lot of time in Minneapolis and other cold places in the winter and appreciate sky bridges for the comfort because it's so damn COLD there.

On another note, has any been keeping track of all the projects that have been recently announced including pre-recession ones that have been re-announced/re-confirmed (or whatever the right word is)? It must be 10-15, and by my count it seems three of them seem to have tentative financing and rough construction start dates.

15-20 is my count. The front page really needs to be updated.

It looks like Austin is on fire right now, and its not because of the heat he he. But really just awesome proposals coming out. Really like the convention tower. Hope they all go though. Will see another crane army invade downtown.

I think with the clear end to the previous boom, and a new wave of skyscrapers coming online, it might be time for a Projects and Construction III thread.

Is the technology/R&D industry fueling this new boom in Austin? Hoping that this same type of boom happens in Denver-Boulder again soon.

Four things:

1) Tech.
2) Immigration.
3) Housing.
4) Relative economic prosperity.

Ofcourse, all of these things reinforce the others.
