Apparently redevelopment is a few years off. There will be public consultation as we have seen for the Cunard site and the area around NS Crystal.

Unfortunately this is part of a huge gap in the waterfront. The area is not going to feel complete until this lot has buildings on it. Even the block on the other side of Lower Water with the Bank of Canada and Ralston Building is half empty. Above that is the hideous Metro Park and depressing United Gulf hole. What a disaster.

Hopefully we'll see something built on the other sites soon, although I'm not sure how much faith I have in that. We've had 10 years of planning on the waterfront that hasn't amounted to anything major.

Whats going to happen with this is that if they make this ''temp'' park its going to end up sitting there for awhile
and when it actually comes time to develop it, its going to be to and there will be ''friends'' of it.

That's the exact thought I have. Once people start using the park or whatever they will call it, nobody will want to see it go. I know it's negative thinking but I also believe it's the truth.

If anyone remembers the G7 Summit that was in Halifax in 1995, this site was used during that week for a variety of things. Some temporary dirt and grass was put down over part of the paved parking lot for something not all that dissimilar to this rendering, while another part of it was turned into a sort of bazaar/market/festival space. It was actually quite cool, with vendors selling their wares, performers, and the like. While not perhaps as good as developing it with structures, at least it is a decent and popular use (at least during good weather parts of the year). And it does open up the waterfront to people more than a development would.

I totally agree about the other sites mentioned.

Certainly is. I highly doubt anything will be built on this lot for quite a few years anyway, might as well get some use out of it. It's a massive eyesore at the moment. Putting down some sod and putting in a little walkway doesn't mean it will stump development in this spot for the rest of eternity. It's a nice bandaid solution until they're ready to build something significant.

Yes indeed, this will be the waterfront oval. Maybe Kelly can get a mug shot when he places the last piece of sod.

Medjuck`s proposal for the Discovery Centre should be canned until he learns his lesson for tying up a prime waterfront site for four years.

If the Convention Centre fails to materialize where it is the Salter block would be a good back up location. Hotel/Convention Centre. Given a prime waterfront location it may get more $$ support.

I like the way the concession tents will be set up. This set-up would make sense for a stadium also, but at a different location. Although permanent washroom facilities for 20,000 - 25,000 people should be built for a stadium, it makes sense for most of the concessions to be temporary (as in the volleyball set-up). Or have permanently sheltered areas for concession stands which can be set up on event day.

Thanks for the link - it is too bad that the stands and volleyball courts can't be seen. What is the seating capacity for the tournament?
