DESIGN FAIL!!
Quote:
a parking entrance and laneway off Main Street through to George
If the City is serious about traffic issues, they will never approve a parking entrance off Main St, especially at an intersection which queues up like crazy (such as Main & Caroline-Bay).

Not sure why the snap judgement as a design fail, but the entrance/egress is actually well designed. Parking will be accessed by a two-way north/south laneway running between Main and George about midblock between Caroline and Bay (almost exactly where the existing building's Main Street parking entrance was located). Traffic flow will not be impeded with this layout, and the development will be a marked improvement on the current urban environment.

The plans promise to extend retail/entertainment businesses east along George from Hess all the way to Bay, quite the transformation from the dismal state of existence this stretch of George has had for the past couple decades.

So Vranic is to blame for the megalot section of Hess. Gotcha.

It's hard to tell from the pic, but it seems the Staybridge [aka future retirement home] (purple dot) is at the N-W corner of George & Caroline. I hope that doesn't meet the few houses along that stretch will be demo'd?

Looking at the plot plan, it is going in the empty lot at the rear of the Tim Horton’s property and the houses are not affected. It will front onto Caroline Street. That is why he is asking that Caroline become two-way on that stretch. It is suppose to start construction in August??? I think this Stay Bridge will stay. He had to sell the first one to pay off his ex-wife in an ugly divorce settlement.

I'm sure she deserved every last penny (and some!).

Well, I'll believe this when I see anything on-site (besdies stored mattresses and propane tanks.. Hmm, think he was trying to blow it up much?)

Perhaps he should start w/ the hotels before tearing down any part of the Revenue Canada bldg.

Moore said Wilson isn't the only two-way conversion on the books — Caroline Street between Main and King streets will likely undergo a similar switch when development gets under way in early 2012.

I'm pretty sure they've submitted a building permit as well. I can't confirm though, most staff are on vacations.

Via Dale Brown, Councillor McHattie’s EA:

Building Permit Information Is Posted On The City Website

"From time to time, we receive reports about construction that is underway, and it is difficult for folks to know whether the work is proceeding legally with a building permit. Unfortunately, we have learned that in many cases, builders do not have a permit. It is now possible to check to see whether a building or demolition permit has been issued for an address at http://www.hamilton.ca/CityDepartmen...rmitSearch.htm. Enter the address and Area/Municipality."

Demolition starts before historic friezes removed

Quote:
Eight friezes by Hamilton’s Elizabeth Holbrook remain cemented in the front façade of the federal building as demolition started on the rear of the building.

Developer Darko Vranich indicated the sculptures would be preserved — and even said he would foot the bill — but as demolition crews began to peel off the north side of the building along George Street Tuesday morning, the friezes remain cemented in.

I'm pretty sure they said they'll keep the Western wall/facade up and work around it.

Tell me about it. What a joke this City has truly become. Imagine the view now after you pass Queen Street. Redevelopment? Ya okay. Would, coulda, shoulda....Hamilton's true motto.

A joke.

Demolition stalled by Ministry of Environment

Quote:
Demolition to the former federal office building at Main and Caroline has been stopped by the Ministry of Environment because there was too much dust.

The job will be stopped until sufficient dust-suppression equipment arrives onsite, said MOE spokesperson Jennifer Hall.

“We were called there for concerns around excessive dust caused by the demolition,” she said. “Environmental officers went to the site, observed and spoke to the lead contractor there. We’ve issued a ticket for creating excessive dust.”

“They’ve stopped the demo until they can get that (dust suppression equipment).”
