I doubt it. Just like '94 it stings for a while but ultimately fades into the dark annals of Vancouver history.

As shameful as this event was, I seriously doubt anyone will decide not to live downtown on the off chance of an event like this occurring every 20 years or so.

Oh? We sold our place a short distance away from the arena just a few months ago, and one of the reasons we sold was because of the disgusting post-game behaviour we'd see spill out of the area after a game.

So, you were sure to pass that information onto the buyers?

The PDS contained several disclosure items, as required. There's no such requirement for externalities which aren't tied to the property.

Thanks, though, for the snide rejoinder.

Yeah, you're right. Still a little pissed about the 'the other night' I guess. It was uncalled for, my apologies to you.

I was talking specifically about the likelihood of rioting being a determining factor in whether or not people live in the entire downtown area, as the original poster suggested. If you didn't like living in an entertainment district, that's your decision to make but it's irrelevant to what I was commenting on.

I think based on the stats from 94 riot the housing market downtown (in terms of prices) will drop a bit as the demand will still be there but not with the current pricing structure. With the latest issues and with the proximity to the stadiums (and unfortunately the never ending peeing on the street by the condos and townhouses by the young males on the weekend) the demand won't be as high as it once was so ultimately price would be a factor for demand. With a drop in prices perhaps there will be more of a demand.

come on peeps stop being daft. Riots are hardly unique to vancouver. The UK has them on a regular basis: the Brixton riots, poll tax riots, coal miners strikes, uefa cup riots in manchester and more recently riots in London over the hike in uni fees. Not to mention the G8 riots in Toronto (they are almost forgotten) It certainly does not put people off living anywhere and hardly defines the places where they happen.

As far as riots go, it was pretty tame. I'm not down playing, but one needs to have some perspective.

The riot is a black eye for sure, but like all bruises, it will heal. As for suggesting that downtown will be less desirable and prices will drop.....wishful thinking.....

Thanks for counteracting the "chicken little" thinking.

It's almost as if some have made a pleasurable hobby of focusing on this situation's obvious negatives.

In the coming year I will be transferring to Vancouver, and even with the most recent events in Vancouver I have not been deterred in buying/leasing downtown. Obviously being a member of this forum this is a no brainer for me. If one takes the time to look at the event a little deeper then being so topline, they would arrive to the conclusion that this was not reflective of Vancouver but a bunch of individuals with issues that go far beyond that night.

especially people from other cities. Here's an interesting little story on some other big sports riots in history:

the news ran a bunch of footage of recent sports riots and they happen a couple times a year somewhere in the world it seems

Yeah, but I thought we liked to call ourselves the best place on earth, not the most bellow average place on earth.

If we want to think of ourselves as one of the most livable cities in the world shouldn't the people here be expected to rise above the lowest common denominator in other cities. Also, other cities have had riots over issues that mattered, like people's rights and freedoms, but here we riot over a sporting event.

Sure, riots happen elsewhere, but I would like to think Vancouver is a better city than say, Manchester. That's the black eye we got, we aren't a great city, we are an average city in the eyes of the world.

It's like saying other husbands beat their wives, so if I beat mine it just means I'm common and normal instead of criminal and a tragedy; "hey, it happens".

^ would be pretty neat though if something like this led to a major dip in overseas buyer activity. bring the prices down for the good guys!

That would be totally fine if it slowed down the Asian buying frenzy, it will give us locals a chance to get in the market....it's about time!

I'm actually pretty ambivalent, if not irked by the outrage at the riots for being a black eye on the city's reputation. The same thing if not worse occurs 24/7, 365 days a year 4 blocks to the north east and I never ever see a massive city-wide cleanup effort there or an online shaming campaign targetting predatory meth dealers. It's like as if Vancouver is quick to put ice on the new shiner on it's left eye while ignoring the festering sore on it's right eye. IMHO the DTES is more of a black eye on Vancouver's reputation than a riot which has only proved to be no more harmful than humourous joke material for late night talk show hosts. Regardless, the city's reputation will survive this.

That's really all I can say on the matter. So how about that delicious Private Residences on Georgia?
