The police were unprepared for this for sure. If what I've seen on CTV is any indication they had no where close to the numbers the needed. In hind sight they really should not have had a public screening of game 7. The crowds became to large to control.

Get a hold of yourself man. There were way more people downtown this time around. A much more thoughtful strategy for this stanley cup riot.

TO GET OUT OF DOWNTOWN: Please head south to Broadway, head to False Creek or take SkyTrain (but not Granville) via VPD.

They shouldn't have had any of the screenings.

I completely agree. Out with the hockey team. The city clearly can't handle having one.

I obviously didn't mean that the police should literally start cracking skulls. I obviously meant that the police should respond appropriately and professionally to acts of crime, that they should not allow individuals to roam the streets and commit crime with impunity. It was the total lack of response to the initial act of crime (i.e., the trashing, overturning and burning of a car in front of the Canada Post Building) that encouraged a full-fledged riot to develop.

That is a complete overreaction. >99% of the city was perfectly well behaved

Yes, the unprecedented damage, destruction and injury caused tonight confirms that a "much more thoughtful strategy was used for this stanley cup."

It's a bit of a chess match. You can't just charge a huge mob. Don't forget there were 100 000 people downtown.

What if the police start going after these looters with so many people around and then are put in a situation where they have to shoot someone? Laying back is the better strategy.

Doesn't make a difference when it's that 1% that destroy the city. A high percentage of people are also perfectly well behaved when it comes to — ownership, too.

At the very least, public events, screenings and festivities (both official and unofficial) should not be allowed to go ahead, and there should be a high-security setup around the arena post-game and some kind of city curfew during the night. There also needs to be some kind of national 'how to not have a hissyfit when things don't go your way' education program. Seeing this behavior repeated decade after decade across the country is just ridiculous.

Bus update - closest buses to Downtown are Hastings or Broadway - best bet is to take SkyTrain and walk to your stop ^EM

Honestly I put a lot of the blame on the city, and police. The police should have told the city (and very well may have) that they could not handle crowds that large and to scrap the screenings and the city should have listened to them. The police probably have more than enough to deal with just the bars/restaurants.

A surefire sign that things could and would get ugly.

I agree with cjohnny4. I don't know what % of Canuck fans are responsible, and I don't care what % of fans are responsible. What I do know is that this is twice this kind of riot has happened as a result of them.

The fact that problems on the Granville "Entertainment" strip has the most amount of assaults in the city should have been Gregor's first clue. Who did he think were going to turn up for these kind of events, nuns?

Sarah Galashan reported on CTV national news that the first vehicle overturned and torched was actually torched by the owner who parked it there intending to do this if the Canucks lost!?

yeah - that's why i don't go to the canada day celebrations or the fireworks anymore - they don't feel fun anymore - i feel too on edge - i've seen multiple fights break out at both events and just isn't enjoyable anymore - you get these young guys looking for fights - so much it gets nicknamed the "celebration of fights"

people here just ruin things - the city tried and it wasn't too bad all the other nights they did it - the first game of the series was on granville and it was too much too handle so they moved it and added more screens which was a good idea as it gave more room - but why not spread them out - they shoved all 3 screens in a one block area and that was a recipe for disaster

I also am always amazed at how many people don't know downtown at all - they know granville station and how to get there but try for them to get anywhere else and they have no clue - like the other day i was with a group of people all locals who had to walk somewhere within downtown and no one knew how to get there or how to find the canada line station at waterfront - like how can people live without knowing things

perhaps the city needs to invest in some boxing rings and or cages to set up at events for these loosers
