I think it's decent, if a little dated. It looks like it was all the rage in the 90s in the rest of North America. Not too much wrong with the planning behind it - though I am concerned that without enough attention, that courtyard-type spaces to explore could easily turn into dark corners to be raped and mugged in.

The more recent design was approved (supported by Council's advisory committees I think, and a hesitantly neutral statement from the Heritage Trust, which ,given their typical assessments of projects, seemed like a ringing endorsement), and I hope there is a reasonable way to help it proceed. I would hope that Medjuck delayed for very good reason, and that the Centennial Group is ready to proceed immediately.

If not, I say the WDC seek new expressions of interest or proposals and builds something else (with a similar commercial/residential mix). I'd be interested to see what HRM by Design would mean for a site like this when it's no longer a paper study and is a built proposal.

According to the allnovascotia.com, the Salter Street block will be used for the Halifax Jazz Festival this summer. The story also states that the WDC will be "sending development rights out for tenure" likely late this year.

I hope that Ralph Medjuck and Centennial Properties will now focus on the Discovery Centre design, and some other developer such as Southwest will develop the Salter Block in the near future.

In this case Centennial Properties simply didn't proceed with their proposal for one reason or another. It was unanimously approved by HRM Council and I don't think that the Heritage Trust opposed it (at least not once the observation tower was dropped). However, it seems as though Ralph Medjuck really wanted the observation tower to be part of it - based on stories that I remember reading in the Halifax area online media (there was never any chance of that happening since it would have been seen from the Citadel ramparts).

Isn't there suppose to be a volleyball tourney there soon? Must be setting up for that.

Either that or they're simply restoring it as a parking lot. It looks like they're just paving over a couple of holes.

As far as I know they are just repairing the parking lot. The volleyball tournament will be on this site. And the sand from it will be used to create a park on the water end. I imagine as soon as they finish fixing the lot they will start work on the park.

From what I remember of the renderings, the volleyball tournament was between Bishop's Landing and the NSP redevelopment.

Wasn't there an 11th hour meeting that we didn't hear anything out of regarding this development? I would love to see it built.

Here is an image for the volleyball tournament (below). The following quote was in the metronews - "The event, which will host 96 teams, male and female, from 30 countries, will be held from Aug. 30 to Sept. 4 on the Halifax Watefront’s Cunard Lot adjacent to the new Nova Scotia Power building."

The volleyball tournament has been moved. I had an evening session with WDCL a few weeks ago with Fusion. We looked at a number of their projects. Including the park for this site. And since they pulled the plug on Centennials development they decided to move the volleyball tournament to the Salter Block.

Thanks for the update - it should be an interesting tournament. Hopefully the weather will be decent.

Well, its terrible news after this tournament is over... I don't really care about volleyball vs. what the previously approved development offered.

This lot will remain vacant for years given this decision.

The craters that were made during geo testing were filled in and paved.
Two WDCL short-term parking payment machines were newly installed.
I also heard that the tournament was moved to this (larger) lot.

(Monthly waterfront parking passes used to be issued for a specific lot, but now parkers purchase one pass that is good for all WDCL parking lots. So, this lot might open soon and be available for both short and long term parking. Due to the flexibility of the WDCL parking pass, the lot can be easily closed for the setup/volleyball/teardown.)
