Anyone that complains about density in Vancouver needs to jump on a plane and head to Asia. I think a nice stroll through Tokyo, Shanghai, or Hong Kong would open their eyes to the fact even this proposal is peanuts on the scale of density.

An initiative worth taking across the city

The green-minded Cambie Corridor Plan integrates land use, transportation and low-carbon energy strategies

By Bob Ransford, Vancouver Sun May 14, 2011

Quote:
- About 100 citizens spoke at the city council meeting during which the plan was debated. A number of people expressed concern with the height and density of the buildings that will be permitted along the corridor. Interestingly, that concern wasn't just about the density and height being too high. A number of speakers criticized the plan for not being ambitious enough in trying to achieve higher density along an important transit line and some called for highrise buildings at key points along Cambie, instead of the mid-rise form that this plan embraces as a template for density along transit arterials in Vancouver.

I noticed fencing up (for demolition, it appeared) just west of the Petro-Canada station on Marine at Cambie- seemed like most of the block.
Anyone know what's being built there?

Also - hearsay alert - I heard that a block of houses fronting Cambie near 33rd are being assembled by a developer. The number I heard was about 12 houses and the going price was $2.5M per house. Apparently that's the talk around the Holy Name Church lately (Cambie & 33rd).

or there is a building near that has been getting leaky condo repairs for quite a few months now with fencing around it

Sadly, I notice the Art Cowie rowhouses are all still for sale on that corner. How many months has it been? Talk about a total misread of the market. I hope his widow isn't carrying a mortage on those.

I believe at least 2 or 3 houses were sold recently on Cambie at 31st (including that spaceshippy 70's one) so someone's obviously assembled those.

Apparently the Art Cowie townhouses are overpriced - small and priced at $1.5 M each I heard.

This could be it - it looks like low rise residential (townhouses?)

Wesgroup owns that and the gas station site as well.

Petro-Can Site at Cambie & Marine

Wesgroup owns the Petro-Can site at Cambie & Marine. The gas station closed permanently on June 1st and Wesgroup has now begun their remediation work. This parcel will be the 3rd key site that forms the future neighbourhood centre of Marine Landing (PCI's project called Marine Gateway @ the Marine Drive SkyTrain station; Intracorp's project that will replace the lowrise blue building on the N.E. corner; and Wesgroup's Petro-can site will all collectively make up the station area of Marine Landing).

The residential building next to the Petro-Can undergoing extensive rainscreening is the Vera Housing Co-op. It is being completely rebuilt from the inside out, while the folks are still living there. The parts of the co-op that have re-emerged look great.

The lot assembly of 10 SFH stretching south along Cambie from Holy Family Church now has a sold sign on it, so I guess we know where the first new development will be.

way too expensive.....especially being on a busy road. Row houses are suppopsed to provide a cheaper alternative to owning a house, with more freedom and no strata fees over a townhouse. Given the price, it would be more appealing to pick up a smaller house.

IIRC, it's starts from the SW corner of Cambie/McGuigan and stretches 10 lots south.

Thanks for that link.
It seems that the hawks are circling along the Cambie Corridor. My neighbours and I have all received offer letters to buy us out, and do basically what is happening in the link you discussed above.

We had no plans of moving, but now it's something we're considering, IF the offer is worth the hassle of move and allows a decent upgrade.

How about some development closer to the stations, not in the middle of one of the longest stretches without a station. I know it was "future", but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Oh well... better than nothing I guess.

Don Cayo at the Vnacouver Sun thinks that the City could raise $675 Million by selling a strip of land from Langara Golf Course fronting Cambie:

Interesting article. I bike up Cambie every day. I didn't realize that golf course was so under-utilized. They'd surely want to make a big park part of the redevelopment, but it's a good idea.
