Hey
Leftcoaster, after you posted this tutorial video about CS5 and the Content Aware fill feature, it got me thinking. So, I got a hold of PS CS5 and have started exploring it
I had the CS3 version for some time, but I hardly knew how to use it. I will try and learn more about the CS5 version now that I have it.
As far as the Content Aware fill, I tried it and it kind of works and kind of doesn't when it comes to removing skyscrapers.
What Photoshop lacks is my knowledge of what is behind the object you are removing and how it should look. (I practically know every square inch of Toronto) PS just clones from the surrounding area automatically and some of the results were funny in a skyline shot I chose. It replicated the whole Bloor and Yonge skyline in an area where I removed a building to the right.
It is cool for simple pictures with simple, generic, repetitive backgrounds (like a bike leaning on a brick wall and you want to remove the bike), but complex images like skylines and specific buildings is a whole other matter. So far, I think it's still faster and easier the old fashioned way that I do it in Paint, because I still have to go back and draw in the missing information anyway.
Thanks for the heads-up about CS5. I'll keep plugging away at it and maybe I can get using it in the future.
