3 or 4 protesters in front of the half-demolished church. The only sign I bothered to read said "Our West End is not for sale".

It's a RENTAL property, folks! With a community centre! It was an under-used church! No one was pushed out of their homes! No one is being hurt by this!

yes, I know the facade is staying its on all the drawings, but 90% of that block is being torn down. As for St Johns went by it today and actually got to gloat at the protesters. Usually I wouldn't, but seeing it was those obnoxious WEN with Randy Hilton I just couldn't help myself.

As it is being torn down you can see it definitely looked quite shoddy with its guts exposed.

You'd find that true of most buildings that are in the middle of demolition.

the building was leaking and needed extensive repairs - part of the reason why the building was sold.

Yes, this is really comparable to the architectural wonder of Penn Station, which frankly still looked quite amazing in that photo.

I couldn't see this posted anywhere already - it looks like Canada Post is closing down its downtown facility. I wonder what will happen to the building and what effect it will have on the proposed new Art Gallery location.. ?

They church fans have put up new signs.

One now says "It's as simple as good and evil."

Another describes the mayor, the city, and the developers as partners in greed. They also fault the United Church of Canada for letting down the community. Apparently, selling a property, collecting taxes, or constructing a rental building along with a community centre, and wanting to turn a profit are examples of EVIL.

You have some very basic thinking going on here.

WOW - thanks for posting!

It's been rumoured for years but last we heard it was on the backburner because of potential land claims to the site.

The Post office site relocation has always been moving ahead, not sure why this is only in the news now, I remember posting the rfp months back which called for the 700,000sqft building.
What is still on hold is the sale of the old post office, they will need to continue using the exisiting site for at least 2 more years, possible even up to 5 more yrs. So they have some time to sort out any potential land claim issues.

Sears building

I'm guessing this has been discussed to death, but does anyone know if there are any plans to either clean the Sears building, or just spruce it up with any cool lighting, or visual features?

I know its probably not feasible but if they're never gonna tear it down it would be cool if they put in a giant garden on the roof or something.

I know what you mean. A projected display/show from the Art Gallery side, and advertising, lit up media on the Robson and Granville sides would be cool as well.
