New name for project: Fairbourne Station

West Valley City • An urban renewal project designed to create a downtown for West Valley will be called Fairbourne Station, city officials announced Thursday.

The development — which previously was referred to as the City Center project — is expected to be built out in the next seven to 10 years with an estimated $500 million of private investment. The name honors Joseph Fairbourne, an early pioneer who settled in the area. The project sits where he had a weigh station for farmers to measure their produce on their way to market 150 years ago.

West Valley City, now the second-largest city in Utah with a population of approximately 130,000, was incorporated in 1980. The area grew up as a suburban and farming community and never had an area considered to be a downtown.

The project, which involves the renewal of the area surrounding and to the west of City Hall, 3600 S. Constitution Blvd. (2700 West), is expected to create about 2,000 jobs and boost economic development in West Valley City.

Plans call for residential, retail, hotel, office and green space next to a transportation hub. A wide pedestrian promenade will connect a plaza and City Hall to a TRAX station that is scheduled to open this summer near 3500 South and 2700 West. The plaza will hold a “forest” of 30 sculptures.

An important element will be a four-star, eight-story Embassy Suites, which is scheduled to break ground this summer at 3500 South and Market Street (2842 West) and open next year.

Although not officially part of the project, Valley Fair Mall also is helping draw the interest of developers to the area. The shopping center, across the street from City Hall, expanded from about 600,000 square feet to its current size of more than 800,000 square feet of retail space since the beginning of 2010.

No renderings yet; I'm not sure how much of this is new information. I was hoping for some kind of tower to accompany the Embassy Suites. I do applaud them for doing this, and where they're doing it--they have potential to build up a nice core there. I still wonder if they wouldn't be better off moving that Staples and Toys R Us...those big boxes are in the way.

Renderings to follow soon. I saw this story on fox 13 news and they showed some renderings and for what I saw this development kind of reminds me of the westside of the gateway mall that has those 7-story apartment buildings lined up in a row with open space. That's what I saw in the renderings. Just waiting for the media to release them so I can post them.
Also It looks like demolition has began since when I was the fox 13 report there was a house in the background getting torn down.
I have to say that I love this and a big thumps up to West Valley City.

I kind of wish they had given West Valley City the name of Fairbourne instead. It has a nice ring to it. I'm anxious to see those renderings.

Thanks guys,

I'm very interested in the civic portion of the project--looks like a new city hall, new library, courthouse and police station--possibly similar to what West Jordan has done on Redwood Road and 7800 South?

Fairbourne will be built around the city’s civic center, drawing visitors not just for the shopping, dining and leisure, but for West Valley’s city hall, public library, police department and courthouse as well. City leaders have long envisioned locating a civic center at this location and with the birth of Fairbourne Station, that dream has become a reality.

...and that plan removes those big boxes and the old City Hall...I like this vision much better than what's currently there.

Is this something the developer is building all at once. Or is this simply a "vision" for West Valley which will never see the light of day, as economic realities cannibalize it over the next 30 years (Triad Center II)?

As a suburbanite, the plan as it currently stands is EXACTLY the kind of T.O.D. development I'd love to see more of (good transit and freeway access without damaging the regional arterial roads).

I love the design of Fairborne Station. It will give a great node of density, in the burbs. This is how the valley and the metro are going to grow over the next 50 years, higher densities in formerly low density burbs, and around transit.

WVC

I can't believe WVC didn't try to lure a performing arts center with 17 40+ story towers. They are really missing the boat.

Could it actually be that the tribune is correct in that this is a new concept. The 300 West SLC store has groceries but I wouldn't say it compares to a Super Target. Maybe this new store is actually similar in size and selection to a Super Target with the look of the more traditional Targets, such as 300 W. Here's my thinking, Target first evolved their smaller stores, including some groceries, into what we have on 300 W, and now they are evolving their Super Target stores into a similar look, including a full grocery selection.

I hope they don't make their Super Targets look like the one on 300W. That one is super lame/disappointing.

I wish they would change it, for sure. West Valley is so generic. I was thinking at the very least, they ought to change it to Lake Valley City. It's still generic, but just seems less lame to me.

I wish Mike Winder weren't making a run for Salt Lake County Mayor...it seems like he has good ideas for WVC. Wish he'd stay there for a term or two and make a difference before he makes a run for a bigger stage.

I drove on I-15 from SL Valley to Utah Valley and saw that they have done a lot of site work on the new NSA Data center. They have some construction trailers on site, also.
