I've never had any faith in Sandy City either. Not because I think it's impossible for Sandy to achieve a good downtown core, but because you can't change the mentality of the people (or mayor). Just look at West Valley. They're practically the same as Sandy. You could argue they have more of an uphill climb as WV is a bit run down in some areas. But have some good things to build around, recognize that it doesn't happen overnight (nor does it have to) and they plan wisely for the future.
It's just a shame that Sandy got so far as stealing the stadium and the Aquarium away from downtown SLC before it became quite clear that Sandy sucks, and will continue to suck for years to come.
Such a waste.

Midvale could easily become a rising star also. I love that little core of the Old Town. Also, the aspect of Gardner Village and the huge new communities going in at the old tailing sites. All of that is within a very central area of Midvale.

All kidding aside, Magna really does have the potential for a charming historic Main Street. There are a few projects going on there that could bring some vitality back to that old part of town.

I LOVE Magna Main St. I previously posted pics of the very cool Senior Center and the very nice looking new library being built there.

I too love Main St Magna. Downtown Magna has huge potential as a very eclectic neighborhood in the county, at which point it should be in SLC. It is a shame that the BRT is on 3500/3300 S and downtown Magna is on 2700. If BRT terminated at Magna Main, there could be some great new development, mixed with the existing historic buildings, creating a great TOD neighborhood on the facing and surrounding blocks. It could look a lot like Historic 25th St in Ogden, on a bit smaller scale.

I think a great first step would be for someone to establish a resident theater company, something local and non-profit to perform on a regular basis at the Empress Theater. Create a little bit of a buzz out there that could attract some additional bodies to the area.

I'm proud of my hometown. It may take 80 more years, but Magna will gentrify one day. It's got a fixable Main Street and residential "blocks."

Done and done.

MAX (BRT) runs every 15 minutes and terminates at Magna Main St. already... actually at 2750 S 9150 West (it turns off Magna Main at the western end and goes half a block south before it actually terminates and then loops back around to 3500 South at 8400 west and goes back to the 3300 S TRAX station. In fact, Magna Main has 3 buses that regularly service it. There is an express bus that leaves from Temple Square area downtown, goes on the freeway directly to Magna Main and then goes up 9150 W to 3100 S, to 8400 West up to 3500 and terminates at 35th and 7200 West. And finally, the #35 bus goes from the 33rd So TRAX station every 30 minutes to Magna Main and back again.

There is a resident theatre company in the Empress Theatre. www.empresstheatre.com They just finished a production of "Oklahoma" 2 days ago and their next one is "The Sound of Music" starting June 10th, followed by "Willie Wonka," "The Music Man," "Forever Plaid," and "Scrooge, The Musical."

Well I'll be damned imagine that. I guess I should go support the Empress theater company, at least once a year. Thanks for the info, good to know. Maybe Magna Main is closer to a renaissance than I expected.

Could Magna be the 'New Downtown' ?

I like Murray's potential a bit more.

I don't see any city, including Sandy being "The New Downtown" I see areas with some potential for more density and maybe even a couple of 15-20 story buildings, West Valley City, Murray, yes even Sandy, and South Jordan (SW Daybreak area that kennecott has planned out for a commercial center)

Midvale and Magna on the other hand. I see them adding some density in the form of 2-4 story residential and maybe a little office space along the lines of an insurance agent, a dentist, small neighborhood type commercial. I pictures these areas as more of a regional (region of the valley) gathering place, with some performing arts, some galleries, unique shops and restaurants. More of a place where people live because of those things rather than where people work.

Very much agree Future Mayor. Los Angeles has done some excellent work with many of it's old village main streets. Historic town centers that were being swallowed up by the sprawl have once again been revived. It has made a tremendous postive difference for L.A. as a whole and it's resulting livability. I think the Wasatch Metro is on the same path, and thankfully it's starting now, instead of waiting for the Wasatch to reach five million-plus people.

Kennecott Land has drawn up long-range plans for the property they own in Magna. One of their plans is to put an office park just north of Magna Main St., fronting the 2100 So Freeway.

Before the real estate/mortgage meltdown, Kennecott Land had planned to start developing their second "Daybreak" like community at Little Valley, which is on the mountain just about half a mile west above Magna Main St. Kennecott Land was planning for several "village centers" like Daybreak along the Oquirrh foothills, but they also got into an argument with Salt Lake County over zoning/planning and pulled funding for a planning committee they had formed with SL County. That and the "meltdown" put their plans for Little Valley on hold for now.

Target slated to build new store in West Valley City

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/7...lley-City.html

(Target)

Target, which in recent years opened 115 stores per year, is only opening 10 new stores nationwide in 2011.

Target's new store in West Valley City will be the prototype of its new stores nationwide, replacing the old Super Target designs.

“They said it was one of the best sites, and one of the cleanest sites they’ve seen in the country,” said Terry Roylance of Suburban Land Reserve Inc., the property’s owner.

“Target will be a welcome addition to the burgeoning 5600 West corridor,” said WVC Councilmember Corey Rushton. “That location will draw customers not only from West Valley City, but also from Magna and even Tooele because of the easy access.”

The West Valley City store will also be the first prototype in the nation of Target's new-store model that is no longer called a Super Target. However, it will still stock groceries...

I'm not sure where the Tribune got their information but I'm pretty sure that this store is not the, "first prototype in the nation". It looks exactly like the SLC store on 300 West that is also not a SuperTarget but does sell groceries. I think they may have wanted to say ONE of the first.

You're correct, Target has been building stores of this type (not a SuperTarget, but carrying a lot of grocery items, including meat & produce) for several years now. Here is a link to an article from 2008 that specifically mentions the P2009 Prototype that is labeled on the rendering from the article:

http://www.bizjournals.com/twincitie...11/story1.html

When I see how incorrect articles like this can be on the details of something that I know a lot about (development) it makes me worry about how much of what else I read, but am not as familiar with, is similarly wrong.

WVC announcing name, details of redevelopment project
http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/news/51...alley.html.csp

West Valley City officials are slated to unveil details and the name of a major redevelopment project at a news conference Thursday.

The event will take place at 10:30 a.m. at the plaza just west of City Hall, 3600 S. Constitution Blvd. (2700 West).

Speakers scheduled to make remarks are Mayor Mike Winder, Gov. Gary Herbert and U.S. Reps. Jim Matheson and Jason Chaffetz.

Officials say the redevelopment project was envisioned when the city was incorporated in 1980. The development is designed to create a downtown for West Valley City.
