Beautiful pics as per usual John. So, someone who knows for sure tell us, isn't the copper sheathing treated so that it will remain that same color?

I like how the attractive, interesting roof angle also serves to so perfectly accomodate the solar panels.

It's mostly copper cladding, but there are also "small amounts of copper alloys, such as copper-zinc and copper-tin," to give variation. That quote came from the "Architect's Statement." Unfortunately, there was nothing in the statement about whether those have been treated to stay that color or whether they'll age and change to a green patina. It seemed like I read previously that they would age, but now I can't remember.

Today the warehouse just south of The Venue in Old Greek Town burned to the ground. I happened to be riding TRAX back to the intermodel hub. I smelt the fire and then saw the fire and decided to take some pictures.

Will they just have to gut and demolish the building now completely, or is it still salvageable? The articles say that the city had slated it for restoration. I'm anxious to see that neighborhood go through it's pending transformation as soon as possible. Hopefully, the real estate economy will correct itself as soon as possible, even faster in the Salt Lake area, because of it's current buildup and growth.

I hadn't though much of the reasoning behind using copper until you asked, but I think it's a very appropriate material considering the purpose of the building. Copper is an abundant resource in Utah. I'm not sure if you had the opportunity to visit the Bingham/Kennecott mine west of the SL valley when you were here, but it's the largest open-pit mine in the world and copper is the most abundant ore there. So it's fitting for a Natural History Museum. The dome of the state capitol is also clad in copper, if you didn't know.

Two Questions Concerning the Triad Center:

1. How long has the Triad Center had this new section of facade?

2. How likely is it that we will see a re-cladding of the Triad Center as part of the BYU Salt Lake project?

S.P., no idea on the new section of facade. Are you thinking you don't like the current look of colored glass and brick? Granted, it's indicative of a certain era, but I've never found the mix of chosen brick at ground level, along with that color tint of glass as unappealing. I suppose there are different tastes on the matter, but I highly doubt that the LDS Church would want to go to the extra expense of recladding something they probably find sufficiently attractive. Also, a future expansion on the block to the East could easily take on a completely different style from the original Triad, without seeming strange or out of place.

Some residents say no way to Salt Lake City mayor’s bicycle greenway

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/politics/51810687-90/east-bike-greenway-medians.html.csp

...Since the greenway idea was unveiled last month on the city’s website, reactions from neighbors, University of Utah students and 200 South business owners have been mixed. Leisure riders sound ecstatic. But road warriors and daily bike commuters have concerns about safety and added congestion...

Courtesy of Salt Lake City Artist's rendering shows proposed 200 South bicycle "greenway" with bike lanes in the medians and midblock crossings between 200 East and 900 East. Also proposed are upgraded intersection signals to detect cyclist motions and allowing food vendors, picnics, yoga classes and more in the medians.

I totally agree. It is a style that is actually much closer to an interesting style than a dated style of design. When you try to count the number of Glass dominated building in SLC there are basically the Wells Fargo building and the great looking Brown high rise between Main and state on South Temple. Sorry, I cannot remember the name.

It would be a total waste of money!

That building is going to be recognized for its totally original and unique design. The setting is terrific.

No, It will not be a waste of money unless you hate the art of design that will unique and challenging.

I may be wrong but I do not think so. This is stunningly original!

It wasn't re-clad, it was a small section that was added a few years ago when a portion of the Triad Center was remodeled before BYU/SLC and the LDS Business College moved in.
