Yeah I agree. I don't think we need to necessarily choose and I don't think elegant design necessarily has to be expensive. We need to think outside the box a little bit.

I really think good design, no matter what it is, is cost efficient, aesthetically stimulating and pleasing as well as fulfills it's set function. Ps...does anyone else think the children's hospital renders are terrible? It's really difficult to understand their basic design even b/c the render itself is so distracting.

I couldn't agree more with this post and your last one - stop annexing land on the edge of the city. Those renderings were a little bizarre... we'll see what comes out in the next weeks-months.

I agree that the current renderings of the Saskatchewan Children's Hospital appear less than inspiring. Perhaps these drawings are an early, early iteration. I guess my vision of what a children's hospital should/could look like has been skewed since seeing the Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary. See link below.

Nice to see an encouraging update on River Landing. Also great to hear they're planning another office complex across the street. That parking lot by the theater is awful. You need a moon buggy to traverse the pot holes.

That area is going to look pretty slick I must say. Hopefully they'll find room for a pub/restaurant or two in there.

I couldn't agree with you more. I have relatives that live within walking distance of the Children's Hospital in Calgary, and to me, that is def along the lines of what ours should look like. It is "fun", colourful and inviting...let's think about the kids here, people!!

Also, I spent part of my afternoon on Sunday looking at a few condo open houses. Went to the LUXE on Broadway and although things may have started slow for them in terms of sales, looks like things have really picked up. This is a pretty high end building, and currently 14 of 24 units are sold (including 3 over $1 million dollars each!!). So, although some people thought that there may not be a demand for higher end condos, this seems to be indicating otherwise.

So all you developers out there sitting on your butts, get out there and build us some innovative, creative quality product and you too can make some good money on your investment! There is a market out there for good product and I personallly would like to see more of it downtown and adjacent to the river (come on Nasser...lets get this thing moving)>

I come with not very noteworthy news. :-S

There's a hideous empty lot on the corner of Preston and Arlington that used to be an Esso I think, maybe 15 years ago, but it's been a gravel lot since then. Within the last week I saw a Hazco excavator parked on it, and today a Hazco truck. Inspired by tales of others on this thread approaching the guy in the truck, I asked what the plan was. "Not much," he said, "just some test pits." Ah, test pits. Not sure what that means, but it precluded me asking if there were any firm development plans, eager and hopeful as I was though. If they're going to "clean that lot up" as he indicated, it suggests the owner is either considering developing it, or selling it, either of which would be far better than the pathetic fate it's endured for the last 15 years. Maybe yet another seniors' tower, in the land of seniors towers?

^ Tim Horton's has popped up here and there as a rumoured tenant for that spot.

As mentioned previously, the corner bay of Broadway and 10th is a cupcake bakery, which turns out to be Crave. Which is wildly successful/famous in Calgary. If you know someone from Calgary, chances are they've heard of Crave. Opening in August.

I think before anyone can build or purchase the old service station lots, they have to do an enviromental test on it. They never know what kind of surprise they will get. I see the beauty at the top of the bridge hasn't moved. Neulfeld's will be taking their equipment out of there soon as spring roads bans will be ending and they will have other moves to make.

Doesn't design usually work the other way? Do all of the site analysis, study the program, relate it to the site then create a design and usually the first design is the most elaborate and must be pruned down :S I'm losing a lot of confidence with the architect working on this. Especially if they are too lazy to accurately photoshop their render.

I guess I just think of the children's hospital in Calgary which was inspired by lego. What thing could be more kid then Lego!? Hopefully there will be some interactive green space or maybe a slopedgreen roof to grade level for the kids. It would be pretty cool to have a roof top play area.

What are you talking about?

It's a rough draft to show the approximate size and location of the hospital.

Don't you think they would have a bit more detailed renderings to present if they had them ready to be made public? Instead of something very vague from 10000 miles away? These were just to show something for the recent campaign boost announcement and the Saskatchewan Children's Hospital Gala.

This isn't some podunk architecture firm. They obviously have a very extensive track record. Including several hospitals.
Or maybe you're right and they're just lazy.

I agree, ZGF's work is not bad. I'm just not the biggest fan of the majority of HGH's work. Their cathedral design
