Parks or parking lots – guess which the city owns more of?
Ever wondered how many parks or parking lots the city owns?
Wonder no more.
On Thursday, Hamilton civic staff quietly released a complete list of the 1,846 properties owned by the city.
The information – available from the city’s web site – is presented in the form of a searchable map and a simple spreadsheet that anyone can download and then easily search, sort, crunch, map or analyze. You can find links to the data at
www.hamilton.ca/cityownedproperties .
The spreadsheet includes tax roll number, ward, municipal address, notes on building types, legal property description, area, land use type etc., but the data is far from perfect with many partial or missing data fields. But as city communications officer Debbie Spence explained, it is very much a ‘beta’ list and will be corrected and improved as time goes by.
A quick stroll through the data shows that the city owns 60 properties it classifies as parking lots, and 585 properties classified as parks/open space. A further 52 plots are designated as “proposed parks”.
OpenHamilton, whose members are part of the city’s open data movement, will be gathering on Sunday at noon for a “hackfest” to see what they can do with this new data. If you’d like to join them in this co-operative data crunching session, drop by 25 Dundurn St. North. Email them at info(at)openhamilton.ca for more information.
