^The two low office buildings on either side are nice, but they lack much street interaction. AMLI Downtown on the other hand is nice with its sidewalk cafe inviting you in. The landscaping around there is alright, too, but what I like most are the bike racks.

Smile My Drawing

I've decided to sketch one of LoneStarMike's photos of Austin, TX. Turns out nicely. My sketch is on the top and his image is on the bottom. It took a few hours, but it was worth it. (Sorry for the sketch quality, the real drawing is higher definition than taking a picture of the sketch)

11 YEAR OLD POWER!!!

F1 organizers announce top motorcycle series, new initiatives
By American-Statesman staff | Tuesday, April 12, 2011, 03:50 PM

Austin will get another major motorsports event, a MotoGP race for 10 years beginning in 2013. The announcement was made Tuesday.

...

Also announced were plans for a three-story convention center that could be used year-round, and a trauma center that will be used as a training facility for area emergency care professionals and medical school students, officials said.

It will also have a large outdoor live music venue, promoter Tavo Hellmund said.

...

Educational partnerships were also announced with Texas A&M, St. Edward’s and Huston-Tillotson universities as well as the Del Valle Independent School District.

I was very skeptical about the F1 track at first. Then cautiously optimistic after the first press conference with Red McCombs. Now, with the recent announcements about the F1 facility and the huge MUDs and other development plans announced around the track I am very excited. This could be huge for Austin.

The one thing I don't get is why aren't more hotels being built in Austin? There are so many big events and conventions sucking up all the rooms.
I guess that's why HomeAway has become so successful.

No doubt... this city is in such dire need for hotel space. It really says something about the lending environment I guess.

Lack of hotels may result in poor visitor experience for many.

The Westin near Hampton should break ground soon and hopefully the sliver as well.

I have no idea when the eco concept hotel on 5th will break, but its planned. Then there is the westin on 3rd which hasn't been mentioned but planned for sometime. And of course we need 1K room convention hotel badly.

The market is there... just shit broke banks.

We don't need the one that was on the drawing board. We need a new one with a better design.

I think the court house will be a much more inviting place to be once it's completed.
Honestly? When those three blocks (including original CSC buildings on each side) were planned, the recationaries thought six stories equated to skyscrapers, and there wasn't a lot of proven demand for additional space downtown then either.

Isn't One Texas Center on Barton Springs Rd. owned by the city of Austin? I believe that is where a lot of the city offices are located. The city hall is primarily offices for the council members and their staff, and of course where city council meetings, planning commission meetings, etc. are held.

One Texas Center

The Austin Formula One site is no longer just that. The former plot of scrub forest southeast of Austin will be the host of not one, but two huge international motor races, and the project, now pegged with a $400 million price tag, will include a conference center, a 22-story signature tower and possibly a hotel.

...

The new race is just one of the plans for the growing development, which has swelled from the original 970 acres to 1,100, according to Bobby Epstein, an Austin investment firm executive who also is an investor. A 40,000-square-foot conference center is on the drawing board as well as 14 executive meeting suites.

Epstein said talks are at a "good stage" with a major hotel developer to build a hotel at the venue.

The Circuit of the Americas will have a 5,500-square-foot medical facility. The development will also be able to handle outdoor concerts drawing up to 35,000 fans.

it will be unreal to finally go to a race in the US.. about 2 miles from where I grew up.
