Good point - that must be why (can't tell that from up here).

Nice sign !
I would have preferred a darker black-brown, but there still good contrast to the wall behind.

Definitely has a retro art deco feel to it (which is a bit weird given the Georgian style of the hotel, but whatever).
It's a lot more "solid" (in a solid presence sense) than a serif font would be.

BTW - note the small spotlights installed above the two pilasters to the left.

But the font used on the sign look to be pretty retro.
it is actually supposed to be off-centre; exactly why itinerant said, because it will be centred above the lobby entrance. There will be no Rosewood signage on the canopy, that section isn't supposed to have any signage.. mayyyybe for the restaurant later on perhaps, but it wasn't designedfor that.
The exact same sign will be on the Howe St. side, but centred on the canopy and over that entrance.

The colours are the same as what is on the corner sign letters.. which will be revealed from under the wrapping shorly

Yup, I realized that see subsequent post above.
Might look weird if they allow a sign for Hawksworth Restaurant up there too.

Is that part of Pender, including VVI, ever UG-LY !!

Are there plans afoot to address that specific area, to improve its sighltness, among other issues?

I really like the last shot.Everything appears so dense, and Shangri-la is like a hiding giant.

Can't wait for the day a 700+ foot office tower goes up across the street from it.

What is ugly about that last pic? To me it looks like layered urbanity, with buildings from many different eras. It's a scene that is rare in Vancouver, but more common place in older cities out east. It is character that so many people think Vancouver lacks.

When I said "ugly," I think I was referring to the unkempt old bjuildings on Pender Street, plus the ultra-1950s-utilitarian former VVI building in contrast with the shiny new CBD.

The street isn't monstrously UGLY as such, but if it were better kept up, and that former VVI removed or replaced, there would be a much more charming contrast between that stretch of Pender and downtown, that's all.
