It looks like project bidding for renovations on the RSA-Banktrust Building is about to end... also, does anyone have any idea what this would be:

(Valued at $500,000,000?!)

Whoa! A $500 million military facility?! I have absolutely no idea what that could be. Hopefully a Navy base.

There was a report on the news the other night that a Military resort might be coming to Dauphin Island. Maybe it but I don't think it would cost 500. interesting...

don't get excited about that $500 million dollar bid request. it has nothing to do with anything in mobile.

Huntington Ingalls wins $1.5 billion Navy contract

PASCAGOULA, Miss. -- Huntington Ingalls Industries Inc. has been awarded a $1.5 billion final construction contract by the U.S. Navy to build the 10th LPD 17 class amphibious transport dock ship LPD 26, Ingalls and the Navy announced today.

Work will be performed primarily in Pascagaoula.

The news caps an exciting and emotional week for the shipyard, which one week ago Saturday christened Arlington, the third Navy amphibious assault vessel named to honor the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001.

On Thursday, Northrop Grumman Corp.'s shipbuilding sector officially parted ways with the defense contractor to become Huntington Ingalls and started trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol HII.

The name combines that of the founder of Virginia's Newport News Shipbuilding, Collis P. Huntington, and the Ingalls family of Birmingham, which founded the local shipyard in 1938.

The new ship will be named USS John P. Murtha.

Construction is expected to get under way in May. Irwin F. Edenzon, corporate vice president and general manager, Gulf Coast Operations, said the contract will keep 1,500 people employed over the next four years and help minimize "long-term impacts to the workforce."

Mississippi's largest employer, the HII's Pascagoula operation employs about 10,800 people.

"This is the first contract awarded to our new company, and our shipbuilders are excited about continuing the LPD product line," Edenzon said.
About San Antonio-class ships
Dimensions: 684 feet long, 105 feet wide
Displacement: Approx. 25,000 tons
Principal mission: To deploy and the combat and support elements of Marine Expeditionary Units and Brigades.

Capacity: Carries to 800 troops , as well as aircraft such as helicopters
Source: Huntington Ingalls Industries

The focus, he said, will be on safety, quality, cost and schedule.

"We've been working hard for the last three years making some changes and focusing on important process improvements," Edenzon said. "I am confident that LPD 26 will be a great ship, and that is our commitment to the sailors and Marines who will serve on her."

Ingalls workers are currently putting the finishing touches on Arlington, and building LPD 22 San Diego, set for sea trials this summer, Edenzon said.

Even with nearby companies like Mobile's Austal USA landing more work and adding potentially thousands of workers, Edenzon said he's confident Ingalls will be able to recruit and retain a skilled workforce.

"We look out at our labor resources at least five years in advance of when we're going to need it for our contracts," he said. "Our training, relationships with community colleges and career days at the company and local high schools help ensure we have an available, skilled workforce," Edenzon said.
"We feel like we can compete with anybody on the Coast."

Ingalls workers earn slightly more than $20 per hour on average.

The Navy gave the spin-off its seal of approval in mid-March, with the announcement that it had reached an agreement with Northrop Grumman to move forward with contracts for LPD 26 and DDG 113.

Conditions included Northrop agreeing to relieve Huntington Ingalls first-quarter 2011 debts, providing a starting cash balance of $300 million, and reimbursing performance incentives and economic price adjustment payments owed by the Navy.

"The announcement that the company has been awarded billion and a half dollar contract to keep 1,500 to 2,000 jobs in south Mississippi is good news," Rep. Steven Palazzo, R-Biloxi, said Friday evening as he boarded a plane to return home from Washington for the weekend.

"I am committed to doing whatever I can do for the shipyard to make sure uncertainly for future contracts is removed .... and continue to drive the costs down so the Navy will produce more ships."

When is the next election !?

It`s time for new leadership in Mobile !

It`s time for Mobile to invest into downtown !! That is the heart beat and soul of the city !

Dow wasn`t the perfect leader but he did establish the String of Pearls.Mobile has had more Economic prosperity during Jones reign than Dow in my opinion but we have nothing to show for it. Jones came up with " A New Plan For Old Mobile " but there is no seeds being planted for the plan or fruit being produced ! We have to git this man out of the seat quickly Mobile !

I would like to add that the economic progress in Jones's administration was the result of Dow's Ideas, negotiations, and initiatives. Sam hasn’t produced one economic gain on his own yet. The only thing he has done, which I am still in amazement, was the annexation of the West Mobile and the Tillman's Corner/ Theodore retail district. Speaking about annexation, maybe we should focus on residential areas that won’t expand our police jurisdiction and try to snag the undeveloped land around them so we could see possible future development. Remember it’s not that people don’t want to live in Mobile; it’s the lack of available vacant land large enough to develop into nice neighborhoods.

Mobile has invested in downtown and has the millions of dollars of debt to prove it. Mobile needs to help foster private investment with very small scale pay as you go improvements to downtown. Mobile needs to now focus on infrastructure (drainage, street paving, and bridge repair) city wide.

I do agree that Sam needs to go. I think he has done some good, but most people don't trust him. For a city to move forward the citizens need to trust their mayor. I just don't want someone like Bess Rich to get in, though. That would be really bad. I would rather have Sam than Bess rich. I just wish Mike would come back. By the way, I think local politicians should have 2 consecutive term limits.

We are so lucky, Steve Nodine didn't run for mayor last election. I don't think he could have won, but what if he did?! Could you imagine the conversations we would be having now.

This city needs a fresh face in the mayor's office. I think another official from the City Council or the County Commission would be more of the same. For that reason, I would be wholeheartedly behind a member of the business community to step up to the plate. Of course the city would then need to look into the salary of the mayor considering it is quite a bit lower than other cities the size of Mobile. That way the office would look just a bit more appealing to non-political figures interested in navigating Mobile towards its full potential.

I agree, the city needs a new face. I would like to see Peavy run again. He had some great ideas two elections ago. I used to really like Sam, but recently I think he has been making some decisions that I really don't agree with. It is becoming harder and harder to defend him in a hostile crowd.

Oh I think the next election is in 2013 but i'm probably wrong.

Have heard from a couple of people that Crockmier's will be relocating downtown and that Catholic Social Services (and their sister stores) will be moving into that strip on Florida St. I have no idea if this is true, nor did the people that told me, but that could vastly improve Dauphin St. downtown. Im sure nobody wanted to invest in that little section with homeless men loitering on an hourly basis.

That would be spectacular. However, CSS should move to the center of need and not the center of it all.

Assuming this is actually happening, Im sure they have a good reason for where they are going to go. Most of their traffic seems to be by foot downtown so Im sure they have some sort of a plan.

I can see that happening.. The people that own Crockmier's also own Grand Central. Recently a doorway was put in the upstairs private party room connecting to the old Martini's, which building they also own. I assume TP's would go in that building.
