Council approves funding for police HQ

Council approves funding for police HQ

By David Hutton, The StarPhoenix
April 5, 2011 4:17 AM

Despite the increased price tag, the new $131-million police headquarters will be "functional," not "extravagant," Saskatoon's police chief told council Monday.

Council unanimously approved a funding plan for the new headquarters, which a new estimate pegs at $131 million including the building, parking, furniture, land costs and consulting fees. [...]

House is still there but someone mentioned that it could be moved this week.
Check out this story > Homes moving on highway near Saskatoon The weird house will be moved by the same company.

I heard from a (very good) source they are trying for Thursday in the early am, it'll go straight down College and I believe will have to go over campus to get around pedestrian overpass. City electrical crew will be on hand to turn light stands out of the way.

Seems like way too much work for something that ugly. But, whatever the homeowner pays for, right?

Also, it looks like they have started building the KFC in Stonebridge (like we need another fast food place in this country) They also had the blue construction fences up behind the Co-op gasbar there as well. Prepping for the grocery store, maybe?

I recently saw an article that made reference to the AGS (Art Gallery of Saskatchewan) being completed in 2014. There has been such little news on this project, that I would have thought with a planned completion for 2014, we would be hearing more about this. Is it in the design phase right now? Has the funding been secured? Are we going to see work start this year??

If anyone has any answers, would appreciate hearing more about this!

Unrelated....I am hoping with the spring thaw now officially happening, that we are going to start seeing some actual work/action occuring at some of the proposed projects scheduled to start this year!!!

I guess I am just getting tired of looking at the empty space around the Persephone theatre and am anxious to see something/anything happening, or at least news of the same.

I can't wait for the first set of renders of the AGS to be released, the firm in charge of it does incredible work. Their National Ballet School is constantly referred to as one of the architectural gems of Toronto.

Great! I also expect it will be nice, based on the firm doing it.

A company by the name of Golden Hawk Properties (a local start-up, it sounds like) has 3 retail spaces available for lease on 20th Street West, all ready this spring.

Based on pictures from their website and additional photos on The Two Twenty's facebook page, all 3 of them are looking like really cool, funky spaces. They could be a great complement to the The Two Twenty up the street, and let's hope some great businesses move in to them sooner rather than later.

Sundance Lube

"Well I work with the owner/builder on an almost daily basis. He was just explaining how the foundation/basement works (because I asked why there was all those metal pipes coming out of the ground.).

He's definitely building a lube shop... So ya, if you're certain, then they must be going in together. "

" I was laughing because we both heard different things for the same lot.
I am not under the impression that a lube shop/Sundance Spa combo is actually going to be built."

dsim249 - thought you might be interested in this picture. Its from the front door of Sundance Spas current store...enjoy

Well whattaya know.

Not sure why you were directing that at me, when I was the one who originally suggested they might be going together, although I didn't think it probable at the time.

I'm loving the slow but gradual change happening on 20th.

I've been trying to support Collective Coffee whenever I can. Its tight on space, but has a cool vibe.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but La Troupe du Jour did a pretty decent job in renovating their space. Looks good.

This project is not in Saskatoon but at my University, Ryerson. This project is scheduled to be completed by 2014 and is the new student centre at a price tag of $112 million. Makes you re think Saskatoon's modest endevours for construction. This project is focused on engaging the public not only visually but through physical engagement. It's also an excellent addition to the eclectic nature of Yonge Street. Hopefully with Saskatoon's new architecture college in the works more structures like this will spring up!

Yeah I saw that on Christopher Hume's blog at the Toronto star. Beautiful looking building. Toronto seems to be getting a lot more of those lately.

A "new era" for Saskatoon

This 2011 City of Saskatoon document is a good read. I especially found pages 8 - 35 interesting (a section called A New Era: An Overview of Issues and Trends Affecting the City of Saskatoon).
