Are you kidding me?? Someone asked about NYC and what we could incorporate from NYC into SLC. What's wrong with that?

Agreed 100%. We discuss a posed question for two posts and all of a sudden a Moderator that I've never seen on our board before tries to whip us into shape. Yet other times the discussion goes on and on, WAY OFF TOPIC and we get NOTHING!

Again, discussing NYC WAS NOT OFF TOPIC! In this particular instance.

Can we get back on topic? This is about Salt Lake, not Berlin. Thank you.

I'm going to assume that the moderator looked at only the most recent posts. Taken out of context, it would be easy to see how someone would think we were just talking about New York instead of seeing what elements would be transferable.

Anyway, maybe I'll rephrase the sentence. As far as activities/events go, what would everyone like to see in Salt Lake that isn't already there? We talk a lot about what buildings should be built, but development is more than just the physical structures, in my opinion. Too often, I think we as forumers say "We need a skyscraper there" when in reality, we should first come up with needs first: "We should start having rooftop piano concerts. Where should we build a rooftop?" OK, absurd example, but you get the idea. What type of events do you wish existed in SLC which would need further physical development?

I've said it before on the CCC thread, but I would love to see a carillon installed on top of a downtown building. There are few things that excite me like the rich sound of bells echoing through city streets. It would be really cool to have regularly scheduled lunchtime recitals and evening concerts to bring people out in the streets. And they could play Christmas carols during the holiday shopping season. If it was built in the right spot, it could be heard all over the CBD, and maybe even up at the U when the weather is just right. I think it would be cool.

PS--One of my biggest pet peeves is the ever more common use of electronic bells/chimes in church belfries and elsewhere. It's just wrong.

I think the Great Salt Lake should be utilized more! I know it's not a pretty sight and smells strange sometimes, but we have this huge body of water with a lot of potential. I think it would be cool to host sailboat and rowing races or the red bull flugtag at the lake. Whatever happened to these days:

Does anybody know whether the 'Nauvoo Bell' still rings hourly on Temple Square?
I haven't noticed it for a while, but I haven't really been paying attention either.

I had no idea that it was the source of the "gong sound' that is played at the top of each hour on KSL radio:

We Need Unique Architecture

I think that it would be great if Salt Lake City was to get something like Federation Square in Melbourne Australia. It is a mixed use civic center and cultural precinct with very unique, modern architecture.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federation_Square

I could see something like this being developed on the block between N & S Temples, and 200 & 300 West. It would be a great addition to the city and a nice change to the "traditional architecture" that dominates our region.

It would also complement and/or supplement the Salt Palace, Abravenel Hall, The Arena, and other surrounding venues/shopping.

It would be great if it was designed to abstractly represent salt crystals, granite mountains, and red sandstone that typifies our state. Top off harsh angles and dominant lines with a unique, free-flowing white roof that appears to be "snow cap." In the public space between and behind buildings, you could create representations of waterfalls and high alpine lakes at different levels.

Daytime and evening activities bring a life to the city that I absolutely love. I remember years ago, 20, when my dad worked in the Univ Club bldg. There was a weekly brown bag concert series, at that time they just hosted it on the Eagle Gate Tower plaza, I think later it moved to Gallivan Plaza.

Gallivan Plaza IMO is the living room/family of the city the twilight concert serious became a success because it was originally hosted at Gallivan, I don't think it will be returning however. Gallivan also hosts Monday night movies during July, which is incredibly cool to go to. Gallivan, when remodeled will once again have something going on several times a week during the summer months. I think the Twilight concert series has done so much for downtown. It has shown people that downtown is safe and it's more than just a place to work, but it's a place to play and live.

There are actually a lot of different activities that go on during the summer throughout all of downtown. Pioneer Park, Gallivan, Capital Grounds, Library Square. I think east downtown could use a gathering place of it's own, for some additional local performances, maybe a small plaza or park around 300 or 400 East and 1st to 3rd S (somewhere in that area) Downtown has Gallivan, Gateway has gateway and Pioneer Park, east downtown needs a gathering place.

Maybe the Exchange Place plaza or grass area could host a weekly lunchtime concert for local artists to perform. The same thing could happen on the SE corner of the CLRSPCC (Salt Palace) on a different day, Gallivan and Eagle Gate tower plaza also.

Pioneer Park, Gallivan, and Library Square have the capacity to host several weekly evening events as well.

Thank you farmer boy!

The moderators have a way sensitive spirit in determining what fits their taste.

If that is the way it is on here then I will go with it. I DO get the feeling that the moderators are basking in the light of "oh yes, we really have a clue and we really dislike the bi directional discord even if it is light and harmless."

Then again, this is a wonderful board of discourse and
far more important a great area to prognosticate a future with discussion. This is a really fine board! Yes... grouped with some slightly myopic moderators and members(I am not
excluding myself)but with really insightful positives of the board that really outweigh feather weight determination.

Can you please stop talking about Melbourne, thanks! (just kidding)

That's a cool idea. It reminds me of ... Uh oh, I'm about to mention some place other than SLC... the Isfjell (Iceberg) building in Oslo, Norway, which is part of a larger complex with all sorts of unique architecture called "Barcode." http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=774674

As has been mentioned many times, I think SLC desperately needs to break up the blocks with pedestrian paths. I think rooftop access to most buildings downtown would be cool, too. I went to lots of rooftop parties in NYC. So much fun. I read an article once many years ago about a downtown building which used to have a rooftop garden for workers to use on their lunch breaks... I think it may have been the Crane Building. This garden was like 100 years ago and has since, obviously, been removed.

I also agree with the idea of resurrecting recreational opportunities at the Great Salt Lake. I think building a village center in the NW Quadrant will help with that because if you look at the map of the village they envision, the western edge of it comes quite close to the lake.

I also think there ought to be more plazas in SLC, not big formal, programmed spaces like Gallivan, but just smaller, informal plazas in front of office buildings. There are plazas all over the place in NYC, in front of, next to, around office buildings in Midtown.

When they announced the design of the new police HQ with the public plaza, so many people complained that the space wouldn't be used. The point of plazas aren't necessarily to be used all the time. They're open space to just break up the wall of buildings and maybe to eat a sandwich in on your lunch break. They don't have to be programmed with a bunch of events. It's like "white space" on a page in graphic design that is meant to rest your eyes and not overwhelm you.

There also need to be more mixed-use spaces developed. The original plan for Library Square included shops, offices and apartments on the open space on the east side of the square. While I just said there needs to be open space above, there also need to be multi-use destinations that don't require everyone to drive to get to. If Library Square had stuck to its original plans, a lot of people could do multiple things at one destination, instead of driving from one place to the next.

I like how you mentioned Library Sq and the new Public Safety building and the amount of open space that these two buildings/blocks provide. SLC needs to encourage some much higher density residential on the surrounding blocks as well as higher density, more than 2-5 story office space in this area as well. With the linear connection from City Hall to the Public Safety building, and hopefully beyond, development needs to not always be focused on the numbered streets. For instance turn have a residential development access both pedestrian and cars, mid block, east of the PS building, or an office building with an entrance on a mid block street/pedestrian corridor. These concepts would accomplish both breaking up the large blocks and using these the linear connections that are being created.

Office space adjacent to Library Sq will create daytime users for the vast open space on that block.

I think the admin had been informed about the previous off-topic stuff that Viperlord told us to stop with, and so, he became hyperalerted about anything slightly off-topic. Though, I saw no harm in the little NYC commentary.

@Stenar: That's a perfect example of what SLC needs. I like their final design much better than the original concept. What I had in mind was something much smaller in size and varying levels so as to not feel overwhelmed at its mass.

I've sketched up a concept of a full city block with many buildings of varying sizes and shapes ranging from one to ten stories tall. It has an organic "Y" shaped mid-block walkway that breaks up the block and creates a fluid and visually striking design. It also has a couple of small streams meandering around and falling from some of the buildings. It would be mixed use; with some office, a hotel, restaurants and several boutique shops, with a possible intimate theater venue. I may scan or digitally reproduce the design and post it later if there's any interest.

I think the organic, unusual use of opaque materials and glass is wonderful. Unique and abstract angles also add to the visual beauty.

If you think about it, it's human habit to design square and boring for the sake of maximizing our resources. In comparison, nothing in nature is as rigid and uninteresting as most of our architecture.

While I appreciate the artistic and architectural value of buildings previously posted, they are not my personal favorites, I think they're hard for humans to relate to and don't do a lot to encourage thriving downtowns. I would prefer seeing more buildings in downtown SLC that focus on the human scale. (Just my personal preference)

Human scale? Those buildings in Norway are only 12 stories tall and the one posted from Melbourne is only 5-6 stories tall. How is that outside the human scale?

How are traditional building designs "human"? Certainly people are USED to boring boxes, but that doesn't mean that there's anything naturally human about that shape. Nor anything that means people can't relate to or enjoy non-traditional, non boxy architecture. The Disney Concert Hall in L.A. is about as untraditional, non-boxy, and artistic of any designs around and it's wildly loved by MANY people. Also, the Disney Concert Hall has led to a revival of downtown L.A.

Actually I love the building you most recently posted. That may be contradicting myself, but I really like it. I would be OK with something like this in SLC. The previous 3 seem very monolithic and cold war-esque whereas the Concert Hall looks very fun and inviting to me.

I've never understood what people mean when they say a building is not 'human scaled' It seems like a phrase that architects just use when they want to talk above people.
