maybe this is a dumb question, sorry. when the west lrt begins servive in 2012 will it be 4 cars trains ? or is there another date set for the 4 car train switch. with the other lines or whatever...

off topic but...
is it just me or does this remind you of peanut butter jelly time -->

My guess is it will be 3 car trains, simply because the NE stations won't all be upgraded to allow for 4 car trains by that point.

And further to that, I'd expect that even once an entire leg is upgraded, we won't see 4 LRV consists all the time. I'd expect 3 to stay the standard, and to see 4 more often during peak and less often outside of peak and on weekends (similar to how Edmonton runs with 3, 4 or 5 LRV consists depending on the time of day and day for instance)

Just to be clear, although the West LRT will likely not see 4 car service right off the bat, the platforms are being built to handle 4 car trains.

Also I agree with mersar. I think 4 car service will be phased in over time. You'll see the odd 4 car train during rush at first. Say, every 4th or 5th train, then that will be ramped up during the rush over several years so it is nearly every train. Then after awhile you'll see 4 car trains during midday should the demand ever get that high.

it'll be interesting thats for sure. I predict we see the 4 car transition a little quicker than you guys are predicting. We are already behind when it comes to platform length and I think the demand is there to have 4 cars during peak hours at least every other train. I know it adds over 100 to the capacity but sometimes those rush hour train rides feel like theres 100 people too many in each car!

Right, all good points. It would clearly make sense to just to use 4 cars during peak times etc. More efficient use of the system I suppose.

I use to take the bus down Bow Trail everyday (in the morning rush) back a few years ago and by the time the old 101 or 104 got to my stop I was stuck standing by the driver. However, sometimes if you were lucky there were 2 buses coming at the same time and they would take turns skipping ahead of each other. To disperse the load of people between the 2 buses. I always though that was a great idea. (until both buses were packed...haha) So bring on that extra car when the line starts in 2012!

We don't have enough LRVs to start going 4 car trains for every other train. 4 cars trains will be used first on the South-NW line, as it probably needs it more.

Of course, everything depends on all the stations being extended. Even after all currently underway construction is complete, there still will be 6 stations left to be extended on the 202 line, and 14 stations left to be extended on the 201 line, plus 1 downtown (Centre Street).

^ I'm not sure about that...I've never seen a 5 car train here. Perhaps they run a few after Oilers/Eskimos games, but normal peak service uses 4 car consists.

Yeah, I don't think its often but I believe all stations but one (I think it is Century Park, its one of the newest ones at least) are long enough, and the one that isn't will be extended fairly soon.

Going back to the thread topic, I'm loving how 26th Street is turning out, its quite impressive to drive past it now the ribs are up.

In Edmonton, the main limitation on capacity is the firstly the power supply and secondly the number of LRVs. The power supply is getting upgraded as we speak. The expansion of the remaining stations to support 5 car consists is underway at heath science and the station just south of it.

Well, also that once they get below a certain headway the southline creates traffic chaos. If that wasn't the case staying a 4 lrv max would make more sense.

For everyone who hasn't been past the WLRT route in a while, drive the whole thing from downtown to 69th Street. It's an amazing to see all of the construction going on!

A group of aldermen (Mar, Keating, Farrell, Pootmans, Carra) and the Mayor went for a tour of the WLRT today, John Mar brought along a cameraphone and tweeted these photos:

Fantastic to have the quality of photo updates we are getting in this thread, thanks to all the photographers, and thanks to those that post photos from the WLRT website.
