Thrifty Foods Announces Further Expansion in Lower Mainland for 2012

Leading Grocery Retailer to Open Store in Revitalized Maple Ridge Mall

Victoria, BC, February 21, 2011 - Thrifty Foods announced today that they have finalized a lease agreement with CB Richard Ellis (CBRE) for a 35,000 square foot grocery store in the soon-to-be-revitalized Haney Place Mall.

"The opportunity to locate one of our stores with our flagship fresh departments in the heart of Maple Ridge is cause for celebration," said Jim Dores, President of Thrifty Foods. "Since 1977, we have dedicated ourselves to getting involved in our communities while providing exceptional customer service and a great food shopping experience."

Haney Place Mall is a 200,000 square foot, enclosed shopping centre - centrally located on the north side of Lougheed Highway, between 224th and 226th Streets - in the heart of Maple Ridge's commercial core.

Acting on behalf of Narland Properties, a western Canadian based real estate management company, CBRE anticipates that the renovations will be complete by late 2011, provided all of the necessary approvals are granted and construction proceeds on schedule.

"Thrifty Foods is an integral piece in the revitalization of the town centre and will become an anchor in the community," said Chris Sherry - one of the principals of Narland Properties. "As a community-focused retailer, Thrifty Foods complements our existing tenant base and their presence in the town centre is guaranteed to transform the area."

The current retail space will undergo an extensive renovation to accommodate Thrifty Foods' customer-centric store design and signature fresh departments. These include an extensive array of organic fruits and vegetables, local and international cheeses, a sushi bar and live seafood tank.

As part of the lease transaction, Haney Place Mall will undergo significant upgrades to its exterior, entrances, and parking area prior to the doors opening at Thrifty Foods in 2012. Located adjacent to arts and leisure facilities as well as complementary commercial tenants, the location is expected to become the focal point of commerce for downtown Maple Ridge.

I'm so there this summer.
My appetite for Montreal-style smoked meat has reached epic proportions.

I hear Thrifty is looking at some locations in Vancouver proper. Think Burrard and B-way area

i noticed yesterday that the Peak Performance store (who ever bought there?) closed. that's prime retail space on robson at hornby. it'll be interesting to see what lands there next.

also, a new starbucks opened in the old hugo boss location on hastings. this starbucks is a LEED retail store. the inside is cool - different than most stores.

All of the new LEED "local" style SBUX are relatively in touch with the local beat. This one is definitely a departure from the local 'bucks, but not exactly within the vein of the 'untitled' style 'o' Starbucks.

I like the two "security" seats that directly face the ramp in to the store. Fun to sit in. LOL.

Starbucks has been rolling out their new store layouts for the past couple of years. I'm not sure what their refresh cycle is, but I've been seeing more and more in the lower mainland. Last I (in HBR, I think) read they have 3 store styles (fixtures, finishes, etc.) and use them specifically to match their local (read: neighbourhood) market.

It is also Vancouver's second Starbucks to have a Clover brewing station. I think that also makes it Canada's third. Seriously, I have never had a cup of coffee better than their 100% Kona, Clover-brewed.

I know people who work there. Haven't been by yet but it's supposed to have one. The app tends to not always be fully updated. I'm surprised that the new store would even show up already.

The Irish bar at Convention Centre opened Monday. Stopped by during the game last night and it was full: http://www.mahonyandsons.com/

Apparently they are working through all the red tape with the City to get their patio going for this summer. Didn't try the food but it's a great spot. Should do well.
