Wow, the Census estimated Atlanta's 2009 population to be over 540K, but the actual count is a little over 420K? How in the world could they overshoot by that much???

Chicago lost 200,000 blacks. That much is proven. Their socioeconomic status is immaterial to the discussion of Atlanta's growth rate. Anyway, as the article excerpt clearly states: Gwinnett County grew by nearly 37%, Fulton by 13%. Obviously new residents bypassed the city proper for the metro area.

My guess is that the algorithms are based in part on building permits. Of course, many of those new homes and condos now sit empty, even as their filling up by the day.

Has anyone come across a calculation of the Atlanta metro? Per the 2008 estimates, the region was believed to be at 5.73 million.

I think it was about a decrease of 200K blacks and 50K whites with gains in Hispanics, Asians and Other.

Not at all. Raleigh proper is almost as large as Atlanta proper according to the new figures.

Wow so it basically pulled a "Houston" (many other cities have done this of course). Former places that were once independent towns or suburbs, have now been absorbed into unincorporated places. It's so dumb to do that IMO.
