Thanks for the picture updates. Admittedly, I find this building to be an eye sore because it looks like a gentrified concrete silo.

Yes. Definitely an eye sore and a major disappointment.

Given that City Hall thought it would be a good idea to raise a stink about One Wall Centre for using the wrong colour of glass, why haven't they said a peep about the ugly mess of exposed concrete that seems to have taken everybody by surprise?

It's a long way from an eyesore in my opinion but it is certainly a disappointment.

The exposed concrete is my favourite element. The only elevation I don't like is the back one. Otherwise, I think its a great looking building and adds some aethstetic diversity to downtown Vancouver.

Gotta say that this thing looked great on paper but the finish product in my opinion only is...it's as ugly as sin.

Personally I have warmed up to it and love the industrialness of it, the un-vancouverness of it, and the darkness of it.

To me it is the rainy grey city defined.

Bravo.

Sadly, this building is very Vancouver, which is no stranger to exposed concrete. The southside of this building is just a 2011 version of any of the dilapidated brutalist concrete apartment blocks in the West End.

In other words, it looks ghetto and manages to make James Cheng look like some sort of genius:

It looks like a tall prison to me. It's dark and mean-looking. I think it's great.

I think that, with Jameson House, people got their expectations up. Waaaaaaaay up.

What we have, IMO, is a building which is smarter and more sophisticated than the average Vancouver building on the west (curved-arches) side, and barely average and arguably acceptable on the other sides, even now that it seems they're putting some finishing touches on it. That is a real disappointment.

It could have, and should been a few storeys taller, yes. But it's built now, and if people are complaining that it's too dark, then look at the TD Tower, its little brother across the street, the Columbia Centre on W. Hastings (if it's still called that) .. and others.

Jameson House - front end - has a rather "chic" quality that is rare in Vancouver. A lot of the problem is, again, the insufficient height, plus the fact that this is a rainy, grey-sky city.

But ... "il faut admettre" .... the back end is dark, gloomy, and cheap looking, a disappointment which I will not defend.

Maybe when the clouds disappear, everything will be okay. The sun and blue skies will reflect off the glass on Jameson to add some life and everything will be alright!

Question what about Pender Street.

Looking at the last picture, I notice that Pender Street near Burrard has some icky tacky characterless little boxes. Any plans for that? Anyone know? It adds no "charm" to the CBD; it's just plain icky-ugly ..... IMHO.

The looming presence of Jameson, like it or not, is in stark contrast.

The renderings of this tower were ultimately very deceptive.

If only the the reflective glass of the north face had been carried around the entire building, this one would have been something truly special.

Instead we are left with a piece of brutalist hell that would rightly fit in with 1960's Brasilia.

... exposed concrete in common perhaps, but pretty cool if you ask me.

I agree with you that it's a disappointment. It's austere, that's for sure, but I wouldn't call it Brutalist Hell from Brasilia. (never been down there, but, boy it sho' is an ugly city !!)

That's very typical of financial districts in most cities.

I don't think that just because a building uses exposed concrete as its principal design medium that it should automatically be condemned. Plain concrete, done right, can look very elegant, but it takes a lot of design skill to get the effect right.

I think it's plywood. I noticed that a few weeks ago. They probably just had a breakage.
