Hamilton joins the GTA

Hamilton didn't join the GTA. They just included Hamilton along with the GTA as the GTHA, Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. No difference than the HNA, Hamilton-Niagara Area.

The GTHA was referenced a lot during the formation of Metrolinx. Now you don't hear much of the "GTHA".

Every municipal and regional planning department in the, well, GTHA uses that term now. It's become common parlance for any form of policy exercise.

The similar naming may be a bit misleading but Hamilton definitely has not become part of the GTA. The GTA remains exactly what it has always been. GTHA is a relatively newer term that is only meant to describe a geographical area larger than the GTA which also includes Hamilton and Oshawa, but not as large as the Golden Horseshoe area, which is the GTHA extended southeast to include Niagara Region.

^The GTA already included Oshawa. And Burlington for that matter, which is part of Hamilton's CMA.

And yes, the term GTHA does not in any way diminish Hamilton, but rather reflects an increasingly multi-nodal urban area based around two major urban cetnres.
