Arrow Burrard Gateway Design Fantasy Thread

That Burrard Gateway has been allowed to go to 54 floors is great. It will make an impressive entrance to the downtown core.

However, many readers have complained that the main tower design is lacklustre, strange, "stereotypically Vancouver condo," just plain ugly, plus
one or two two highly original - but perjorative - epithets.

Therefore, Ladies and Gentlemen of SSP Vancouver, I would like to propose a
"BURRARD GATEWAY DESIGN FANTASY THREAD," using all the abundant talent of this forum.

Renders, mock-ups, drawings ... any medium you wish to use, please use.

Just present us with something we can present to the "powers that be" to make Burrard Gateway, an elegant, striking, design statement, as one drives into downtown Vancouver. Please ... so many people here have so many great ideas ... LET'S GO FOR IT !!

...As if the thoughts and ideas of what you post here would make any difference?

Sorry to say but it's kinda odd how you're preaching from across the pond...and that you haven't been back here for how long now?

Excuse me. I'm not "preaching across the pond." I simply noticed that many people had reactions to the tower design ranging from mediocre to outright negative. I thought that if people came up with other designs (and this has been done on threads before) that the ideas might be submitted to the city just for idea input.
*
If that's too far-fetched, there might just be some people who would like to do this to express themselves in what they feel such an important building should look like.
*
And hey, if people don't like this thread, and don't want to participate, don't particpate. I won't cry about it. It' just sometimes nice to have input into what happens in the city, that's all.

^ And I'm pretty sure there's already a topic for that.

Sorry, I should have been clearer and have said that you're preaching from across the OCEAN.

Agree with Mr. X, you are free to feel what you like about the proposal and envision something else, but it will not change anything. This is a solid proposal and is not about to be re-designed. It was designed to the liking of the client, they are the ones footing the bill.
Personally I think people are being too hard on this one. Details are what makes and breaks a building and this proposal isn't at that stage yet. As it progresses I think it will grow on some of the people that currently don't adore the design.

Although the idea of affecting a change in the official design of the building is totally unrealistic, trofirhen's primary idea of having a thread in which fantasy versions of a proposed building can be presented is a perfectly worthwhile idea in theory. This was most recently done in the Telus Tower thread, where a forum member presented his own hoax version of what the proposed Telus Tower could look like. It won considerable praise from some quarters. Either way, it led to a lot of discussion.

Although it is unlikely that any fantasy renders will be forthcoming, since I think there is only one forum member skilled in making his own renders (i.e., dleung), the dismissiveness and hostility displayed by some toward what is essentially a perfectly good idea is totally unjustified.

It is a shame that not more of us are capable of designing our own renders and that threads like this are unlikely to work, especially in light of the fact that we spend so much time being armchair architects and criticizing the designs of others. It would be nice to see us start putting our money where our mouths are for once. It is so easy to tear down the works of others; it is much more difficult to present a positive vision of our own.

absolutely agree. jlousa and mr.x need to simmer down. stop being so upitty about a forumer promoting creativity amongst the users. i would love to see what some ppl can think up, even if just in words. or a sketch. or, if dleung can be bothered, a full on render. cuz the proposal, tho tall and such, could and should be a lot more unique for the cities potential second tallest AND the downtown gateway tower. seeeerrriously.

i'll start off by suggesting something that may get me lynched. i think we should look to calgarys newer towers. canterra, EAP, bow.... all so sexy. standard issue vancouver rectangles are dreadful. georgia tries to break away, and looks unique amongst the other boxes...but is still a box. the best tower in town is One Wall. curvy and succulent. something 54 floors at the burrard entry to our glorious downtown should stand out, not just in height. and im sure everyone agrees with that.

Even though this thread may already be dead in the water, I want to say "thank you" for your moral support and graciousness.
