I've always thought that palms fit well in Mobile. A brochure, made in France in 1705 trying to lure colonist to Mobile, featured our city with palm trees. I have lived in Mid-town Mobile all my life and little wild palmettos are in practically everyone's backyard.
Here is a video (from the press register/al.com) of a walk to the +1,000 yrs old Indian Mounds (little pyramids) that are in the middle of the delta. Since Mobile was built on the reclaimed east end of the delta, this is most likely what Mobile looked like when the first french settlers arrived:
