Austin lawyer Stacy Zoern called a struggling Hungarian company last year simply to buy a wheelchair-accessible electric car. Now she’s running the business, relocating it here and raising the capital so it can open an assembly plant in Pflugerville north of Austin.
Earlier this month, Hungary-based Kenguru Services KFT merged with Zoern’s Community Cars Inc., which has infused the project with $250,000 to ramp up production of a tiny, bright yellow vehicle called the Kenguru.

There is a lot of activity at the former Star Riverside construction site. I passed by there this morning and heavy construction equipment was either destroying what was built so far or something else...
^Fingers crossed for a continuation of what was already planned. That was a great project that would have been prime for helping set up the proprosed rail line and future redevelopment in the best site in the city for density outside of downtown (maybe Domain and Mueller could be, but the latter has not placed much importance in density).

Indeed! They were asking over $500 per foot back in 2007 - a bad case of inexperience and hubris gone awry. Rance Clouse is taking over the development. He is the also the developer of 904 West Ave - one of my favorite developments in downtown Austin - which bodes well for the future of the project.
Aside from the cleverness of the writer, that's a very cool idea and I hope they're immensely successful.
That's the term used in manufacturing. I didn't even notice its use as a pun until you pointed it out. Maybe the author is in the same boat and didn't realize it was clever either.
The Formula 1 site now has been cleared. Went past there yesterday all you can see was nothing but constuction equipment and dirt. btw there are 3 new cranes up at UT.
What are they up to at UT? Anyone know? I know they approved the big new super computer center up in North Austin, but didn't know of anything going on around campus.
Oh, if anyone hasn't been to the AT&T Hotel and Conference Center right across from the State History Museum it is really damn nice and worth checking out if you're ever up around campus.
Sorry for the double post but I just had to post this here as the W is one of Austin's big new talked about buildings. I love the Republic of Austin blog and their videos as they always show cool parts of Austin like our skyline or the Metro-rail or other cool new Austin stuff and this one they just put up today is no different. It is showing some "Elevator Music" at the W. Also watch it to the end. There are some great views from the top of the building at the end there.
There's actually 4 now. Two yellow ones that look to be on the same site west of the stadium, one red and white one on the southeast side of the campus and another red and white one on the northwest side of the campus.
I also noticed last weekend that there's two tower cranes at Texas State down in San Marcos. Both seemed to be around 150 feet tall.

University finalizes design for Performing Arts Center

Following months of growing anticipation, Texas State University has unveiled design plans for the planned new Performing Arts Center.
The Performing Arts Center will be constructed facing University Drive, on the current site of Falls Hall. The state-of-the-art facility will feature a 400-seat theatre and a 300-seat recital hall as well as rehearsal spaces, staging areas, classrooms and a grand lobby.
Our students deserve this venue for their talents, and our faculty deserve it to showcase the results of their teaching and mentoring,” said Texas State Provost Perry Moore.
The Performing Arts Center was chosen as one of the five pillars of the university’s Pride in Action campaign. The usefulness of the current 41-year-old Theatre Center is hampered by limited space, outmoded wiring and obsolete technical capabilities — all inadequate for a modern theatre program, university officials said.
“The importance of the project is evident in the fact that we chose it as one of the five pillars of the Pride in Action campaign,” said Texas State President Denise Trauth. “All of us are very excited about the new Performing Arts Center, but no one is more excited than Patti Harrison. Patti gave us the lead gift for the project — $8 million. Her faith in the vision launched the fundraising for the facility and kept it at the top of our ‘must-do’ list.”
Well this is disappointing. We went from a proposed 30-story Cesar Pelli designed office tower with the museum attached, to them leaving downtown and that tower was cancelled a while ago. We'll still get a 300+ foot courthouse on that block, but it won't be as nice.

The Austin Museum of Art will give up the lease to its gallery at 823 Congress Ave., a space that it has rented since 1995, and focus on its Laguna Gloria property, a 12-acre historical estate and house in West Austin that is its original home.
Details were included in a fact sheet sent to the American-Statesman on Thursday, a document that museum board President Lynn Sherman said was also sent to board members and major donors.
The document said that the museum was investigating the "potential development of a sculpture park and nature trail" on the Laguna Gloria property.
It also comes after a December announcement that the museum sold its vacant downtown lot — bounded by West Third, West Fourth, San Antonio and Guadalupe streets — to Travis County for $21.75 million. The county plans to build a civil and family law courthouse on the site.

It's ok. Nothing to write home about, but it's not terrible. I'd even say it's better than the new Zach Scott Theatre in Austin. My only problem is it comes off seeming like something a suburb would get. And San Marcos isn't exactly a suburb, even though it acts like one sometimes.
