HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - The Huntsville metropolitan area is now Alabama's second largest with 417,593 people, new census figures show. That puts it above Mobile, which was No. 2 and has 412,992 people. Jefferson County's metro area is still No. 1 with 1.12 million people.

Madison and Limestone counties combine to make up the Huntsville metro area. Limestone County has 82,782 people, according to the census. Mobile County's metro area does not include fast-growing Baldwin County, which has approximately 180,000 people.

Metropolitan areas are core urban areas not defined by the Census Bureau but by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget. They are used by federal agencies in compiling and publishing federal statistics, and they are used commercially by businesses to make decisions about locating new outlets.

You're probably right, just not yet. Census commuting data from 2009 suggests we will have a Huntsville-Decatur-Albertville CSA when the official revisions are made in Summer 2013. A Huntsville-Decatur MSA will be very, very close.

I love how the Times has already claimed victory and declared Huntsville as the second largest metro area in Alabama. Baldwin County, according to 2009 estimates, has now crossed the 25% commuting threshold to be included in the Mobile MSA. But like I said, the official designations won't be made for another couple of years.

It's true. With current definitions, Mobile would wind up being the second largest in the state by quite a bit. But of course, we'll see. The Decatur MSA might now even merge with the Huntsville MSA. Anyone know when the MSA definitions are supposed to come out?

Marshall named program office for new rocket Huntsville Times

"The Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., will lead NASA's efforts on a heavy- lift rocket that will carry humans beyond low Earth orbit," a statement from NASA headquarters said. New Springhill Suites downtown opens in April.
Ok while it will be a great addition downtown and is part of a bigger development...the look of the exterior is well lets just say architecture is dead
in the city of Huntsville. The sign on the building is about impossible to read
and unless they have a monument sign close to the Parkway forget it.
The interior will be very nice however and I'm sure landscaping will help but at the moment the Metro Jail has a better exterior look.

And the downtown Sheraton plan that will be presented in more detail this month..forget that unless a different location is used (Clinton/Monroe)
add more floors (at least 15 total) and include a parking deck. The current rendering that was earlier shown should be scrapped and hire someone who
can design a building that is significant, no stucco, bland brick, or modular housing.

It looks like site prep has begun on the Jones Valley Kohls. I guess they got those access issues worked out. I just wish it was a store I like better...

Site work has begun on a new Holiday Inn Express on the corner of Madison Blvd and Wal-Triana in Madison.

Airline passenger traffic was up 12.9 percent in February compared to February 2010, and increased 10.3 percent for the first two months of the year compared to the same period in 2010.
85,577 passengers flew into and out of the airport last month.

Some downtown restaurant changes with new owners
The Chophouse is currently closed and under renovation but will soon re-open as James Steakhouse.
Humphreys next door is also involved in the changes so we will see.

Target broke ground in Madison, too bad it will be a typical example of poor shopping center design. What few older hardwood trees in the very back of the lot will be removed and a high berm with a wood fence will go in their place. Add that , we will figure it out later attitude about the effects on the primitive road system in that area it should be a fun area to navigate. This is adjacent to the very large Huntsville Hospital complex under construction.

also in the area planned is another Super Walmart to add to Huntsvilles impressive urban sprawl

On Wednesday, the city's subdivision committee approved layout plans for the 63-acre Colonial Promenade Huntsville shopping center on the north side of U.S. 72 West between Balch and County Line roads.

Along with Walmart, drawings on file with the city show the project would include two large anchor stores, 50,000 square feet of additional retail space and possibly an apartment complex

I saw an article on AL.com the other day saying that it would take $16million to expand 72 to 7 lanes up to County Line Rd, but it is only a pipe dream right now.

Yet I drive down through Birmingham the other day and saw a big interchange on I-65 starting to be built north of the town, but couldn't understand why as there was nothing in that area.

One of these days the legislature in Montgomery will appreciate just how much this town is keeping Alabama above water.
