I was very nervous that it was dead in 08 as well.
Same article, but a lot of things were on the brink then (a lot still are). Financing still is hard to come by, but we are beginning to see a thaw I believe.

^^^ Sorry

I'm not too worried about the rest of the Atlantic Railyards project outside of the Barclays Center lot. Those, from what I can tell, will just be basic high rise apartments.

Miss Brooklyn on the otherhand is a different story. Last I heard, they had scaled the building back to a thimble. IMO, they should just build nothing at all there until they have the proper financing to build a decent sized building. No need to build a half-assed building that will make the whole complex look terrible for years to come.

The commercial component of the entire complex was cut back, so that had a lot to do with it.

My lord, I was trying to figure out what that facade was for the longest time. I could not figure it was for the new stadium. I thought it was a new building near the area for some reason, until now.

Things are going so well, must be time for more fighting over Atlantic Yards...

Slopers will rally tomorrow night against sports bar near Barclays Center

By Natalie O’Neill
February 27, 2011

Quote:

First came the fight over Atlantic Yards — now comes the fight over all the bars it will attract.

Park Slope residents are planning to storm a Community Board 6 hearing on Monday night to protest a liquor license for Prime 6 NYC, a live music venue and sports bar that is under construction at the corner of Flatbush and Sixth avenues — just one and a half blocks from the future home of the Brooklyn-bound Nets.

Their large venue, which will occupy the shuttered Royal Video, is a “two-floor” club with “outdoor seating with a beautiful garden,” according to the Prime 6 NYC Myspace page.

But residents believe that the bar will target a hoops and hip-hop crowd that will be raucous before and after games.

“It is completely in conflict with an internationally famous, family oriented area,” said Steve Ettlinger, a non-fiction writer who lives nearby. “And everyone who has approached the owner has been rudely rebuffed.”

Akiva Ofshtein, who is listed as the lessee in public records, did not return calls, but the bar’s social media websites offer a glimpse at what’s to come.

On the bar’s Facebook page, where the Prime 6 logo is in the shape of a basketball, many of the “friends” are musicians and DJs.

The webpage also includes a link to the “Prime 6 mixed CD,” which was created by hip hop artist DJ Big Jeff, who has songs titled, “Motha F–ka, I’m Ill” and “New Money.”

The bar’s Myspace page looks a little different; it has 300 friends, most of whom are attractive women, posing suggestively.

The owner of the building, Lina Feng, would say only, “I’m not at liberty to talk about it. I just collect the rent.”
Here's the page...

Is Any Business Safe From the Arenafication of Brooklyn?

Photo via Park Slope Patch

Wednesday, March 2, 2011, by Joey Arak

Quote:
Atlantic Yards is already the biggest thing to hit Brooklyn since that meteor that killed all the dinosaurs (look it up), and its impact will extend far beyond the megaproject's footprint. The under-construction Barclays Center is a huge arena, and huge arenas bring in huge crowds. Local businesses that rely on the exchange of goods and services for currency like to appeal to these crowds. It's the reason why you can't swing a dead Flyers fan outside Madison Square Garden without hitting a sports bar. But the Barclays Center is not in Midtown, and already brownstone Brooklyn residents are fearing the first signs of the arenafication of their neighborhoods.

That's apparent in the backlash to Prime 6, the planned bar/restaurant at Flatbush and Sixth Avenues that some Park Slopers assume will be a rowdy hip-hop club catering to arena crowds. The latest chapter in the saga, Fucked in Park Slope points out, is one resident's apparently serious attempt to get Prime 6's owner to opt for indie rock over hip-hop. And nope, race has nothing to do with it.

Even the local dive bars aren't safe!

The Sloper's online petition, which currently has 15 signatures, states that Prime 6 has a right to exist, but would "see far more financial success as a different kind of nightlife establishment." On the neighborhood impact: "It's not 'racist' to equate hip-hop with an elevated crime rate vis a vi other types of musical genres - It's just a statistical fact that crime is more likely to occur among urban audiences than among audiences of other demographics." Clearly this person doesn't remember the Grizzly Bear-Sufjan Stevens knife fight of '08. They're still trying to get the blood stains out of the couches at the Bell House.

Even some local haunts appear to be getting arenafied. Ancient dive bar O'Connor's on Fifth Avenue and Dean Street, not far from the Barclays Center, is tripling in size and adding an upstairs restaurant in an effort to modernize, the Brooklyn Paper reports. The owners say it has nothing to do with the arena, but one regular says "it seems like there won’t be that same run-down feeling," and an O'Connor's bartender told the BP "the vibe might change." What's next, Gorilla Coffee selling Nets foam fingers?
