It's because apartments carry a negative stigma in some elitist communities like Holladay or other east bench communities. It's unfortunate that some cannot see the benefits for a community from well planned housing diversity.

Traffic was also a major concern, as the intersections there are already busy almost all the time.

Sandy will soon be the new home to SCHEELS, a 220,000 square foot retail destination that will be located on State Street and 11400 South. The private, family owned business will begin construction in February with completion scheduled for September of 2012.

"SCHEELS only location in Utah will be a beautiful addition and will provide a new retail and entertainment opportunity for the residents of Sandy and Salt Lake County as well as provide more than 400 new jobs to our local economy," stated Sandy's Mayor Tom Dolan. "Their reputation as one of the best retailers in the country, along with their high standards of excellence, will be right at home with the other great companies that are already a part of Sandy."

SCHEELS is unlike other sporting goods stores through unique shopping and entertainment features in their stores. The store in Sandy will feature a collection of specialty shops, ranging from the hottest fashion apparel and technical running gear, to spectacular hunting and fishing shops. The sport shoe, hiking boot and casual footwear selection will be designed to be the largest in Utah. Interactive shopping will include a world-class golf shop, bike shop, ski and snowboard shop, canoe and kayak shop and fishing shop.

Special attractions will include a 65-foot, 16-car, operating Ferris Wheel, a huge 16,000 gallon saltwater aquarium, a 35 foot tall wildlife mountain, a home decor and gift lodge, shooting galleries and Buck Hunter shooting simulators. Visitors will be able to test their golf, soccer, hockey, baseball, football and baskeball skills in the sport simulators. There will be a walk of United States Presidents featuring two fully animated, talking presidents.

The SCHEELS shopping experience also includes Gramma Ginna's Deli and Fudge Shop which serves gourmet soups and sandwiches, Starbucks coffee and specialty drinks, 24 flavors of home made fudge and 18 flavors of gelato make their location unique.

SCHEELS has been in business since 1902 and has 23 locations in eight states including North Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, Montana, Wisconsin, Nebraska and Nevada. Their newest store located in Springfield, Illinois is scheduled to open in June of this year.

It's similar to Cabelas and Ikea. Destination retail requires a draw of a mass population and geographic area. Placing a store in both cities, right now, would reduce the impact on both stores, and would severely impact the business model that these types of stores run on.

Interesting news, I do not think the possibility of getting this new store was ever mentioned in the press here in Boise, so it makes me wonder if this store had already decided on the Salt Lake area. Boise has a Cabelas and several other large national chain and regional chain sporting good stores and a lot of small locally owned sporting goods stores so we are doing fine regarding this type of retail, we don't want to push the local stores out because of a another big box store. I have to say the ferris wheel seems a bit stange for a sporting goods store, but whatever gets the shoppers in is a good thing. Good news for Sandy

Scheels is a pretty large midwestern sports retail store, similar to Dick's. They just built a new store where I'm from (South Dakota) and it's a very nice store. Also, it is pronounced sheels.

It looks more similar to Cabelas or Bass Pro shop than Dicks...

It's not. Unless that's what they are going for in their new stores. They focus more on indoor and outdoor sports rather than hunting and fishing.

...Spiros Makris opened the Sostanza restaurant about a year and a half ago. It was a risky move for sure. But Makris, a longtime resident of the community, never hesitated.

"The building was unique. When we were going to do the project originally, I wanted to do something in the historical part of downtown."

He purchased two turn-of-the-century buildings. They didn't meet code and needed a lot of work. So Makris and Tooele city leaders started working together...
