There is an empty lot on that corner next to the Company House, good spot to develop.

Indeed, although any development on Gottingen are helpful IMO.

And there's an empty bank building on the other corner. Or is that part of the townhouses that are going up?

Looks good; looks like itis the empty lot beside the Company House.
A bit farther north they are cladding the front of the building next to KitKat pizza, and a few more places north are framing a new building. Bit by bit.

Ohhhh! Now I know where this is; I was struggling with the location. This is just down the block from Menzbar - a friend of mine owns that bar and I go when I'm in town. It's the 'grass parcel' next to the design firm. Okay.
Yeah it's not too bad; although I'd still like to see much taller buildings in the area.

But I'm prepared to wait 20 years and see it evolve piece by piece; it will be worth it.

Pretty sure this building is actually a Kassner Goodspeed design. That said, given the nature of the building's intent, I would not expect to see high-end materials on this. However, it will certainly be head and shoulders above most of its neighbors when it comes to curb appeal. I think this is a good development for the area - certainly another step in the right direction when it comes to revamping that neighborhood.

So here's something interesting, especially given the progress of some nearby sites. The Tim Horton's on Dutch Village has just closed, and I have heard that the Giant Tiger will be following close behind. Tim's stores don't 'go out of business', so one can assume that they have been asked to move...I smell a redevelopment...

Sometimes Tims stores do seem to just close. The Ochterloney tims in Dartmouth closed about a year ago, and still just an empty store, although a godd place to build something. Ochterloney has had lots of recent developmnet, but nothing at the empty tims.

The Giant Tiger and Tims currently are listed with different owners, although the building behind Tims is owned by the same person as Giant Tiger. United Gulf has been working on the Halifax West development and has submitted newer plans to the city.

This is, I think, how the best progress tends to be made in urban neighbourhoods. The more infill there is the more land prices will rise and the more demand there will be for new shops and services. New people and investment create a "virtuous circle" and the quality of new development gradually improves. This is definitely what has happened in parts of the South End.

Sometimes people seem to want a perfect or high-quality development in a marginal area from the beginning but that rarely works out because people can buy higher priced condos or apartments in more desirable areas. If Gottingen "holds out" for the perfect development it will never happen.

I'd favour merging this thread into "General Updates and News" and unstickying.

The old MET store on Gottingen St. is being emptied out by the truckload the last couple of days. Be nice to see that come down.

Here's a rendering called "Tower III - Dartmouth" on Geoff Keddy's website:

What could it be? The site implies that it's not King's Wharf. Maybe it's the tower proposed for Irishtown Road. If that's the case then it will be quite the skyline addition.

This isn't the one that is supposed to be built where the 2 Horizon towers are is it? I know there was supposed to a third added. If it is Irishtown Road, how could anyone say that they wouldn't want it built? Don't all answer at once.
This is a beautiful building. I hope this becomes reality.

DAL has it right when it comes to being modern and at the same time still remaining eye catching. I like this.
notice the old man in the hat on the roof spying on all the young ladies?

On their website it is listed under commercial projects. I emailed them to see if I could get any details.

It's a great design but I don't believe this is the work of Dal. The buildings that its replacing aren't owned by the university.

yeah I will be pretty darn happy to see this one go up in my neighbourhood. Attractive design, good location, nice scale for that particular site, and I love the look of the materials (assuming it actually looks that way when it is built).
And certainly the building that it is replacing (the one with the Needs on the main floor) is a dump (no offence to the people renting the upper floors LOL).
