i would much rather see surrey build a 10,000 seat arena than a stadium.
an arena could attract a whl/ahl franchise...plus 10,000 seats would be great for concerts and could attract big names.

if surrey was really ambitious they would be working with the whitecaps to build the soccer stadium. whitecaps wanted to spend their own money for downtown stadium but got turned down....if surrey offers them enough perks like free land/tax breaks that might get their attention.

a 10000 seat arena for a hockey team plus a soccer stadium for the whitecaps would really put surrey on the map...but i doubt it will happen.

People would ride 40 minutes out to the end of SkyTrain for a hockey team. Would they ride out there for soccer? I wonder. I think being located downtown is important for legitimacy for the Whitecaps FC.

For me this is one of the most frustrating things about living in Surrey, one step forward two steps back! Surrey likes to tell anyone who's listening that they are the second downtown in BC, yet when it comes to building a core they pull a bonehead move like this! How many "true" cities have a 10000 seat stadium in the middle of a friggin corn field! Didn't they already try putting a baseball team out there back in the 90's and fail miserably? If funding is the issue they should just wait until they have enough money to do it right. God I hope this is just an early Aprils fool joke.

I hate to be a bit cynical but this smells more like a political move than anything else. At a recent council meeting council moved to change the wording of their renewable energy initiative to make sure it included all of Surrey rather than Central Surrey only and now suddenly an arena/stadium is to be built out in Cloverdale.

Sounds to me in an election year, council is adjusting things around to make sure they all get re-elected. Outside of Surrey Central some people do feel that council focusses too much on "Central Surrey" instead of the rest and I know those concerns have been voiced in these forums especially surrounding areas like Clayton or Grandview.

So this could simply be political posturing. Create a project, mention Cloverdale a dozen times, send staff off to do a study, year goes by, election is completed, everyone happy because all areas looked after apparently, staff comes back and council decides "Nope downtown Surrey is better than Cloverdale because study shows" and they've survived an election.

Don't be surprised if at the end of this year after the election the stadium is back to Surrey Central. I could be wrong absolutely, but it just smells of political positioning. Same thing happens in a lot of cities. Areas feel they are ignored, next thing you know they get the big project announcements.

well i'm keeping my hopes it does come to central. While its not bad to have one there central should be the main focus of surrey. I live in guildford these days. I would have no problem with seeing more money push to central then here

Retail complexes right on SFPR? Looks like this'll be the next "Queensborough Landing".

In all honesty I think that building is actually rather impressive in stature. Granted the design won't win any architecture awards but it is imposing. And you can also see it right now from FHW. I am fairly certain when they widen that stretch of Fraser Highway and take down the brush on the side there, you'll see the building without any issue.

That 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵!. We really don't need any more of these outdated car malls. Retail should go where people can walk/bike/take transit to it and where it can actually contribute to the urban fabric - not in the middle of warehouses and distribution centres just off the freeway... This land should be industrial only.

I think those areas are prime for big box outlet a la queensborough and the outlet malls supposedly coming from the states.....walk up retail works only in a ped friendly area...and down there will not be ped friendly for a long time decades.....with a freeway bridges and main road scott road right there it is a prime location better than the used auto parts and motorcycle gang headquarters down there now lol

but this has to be the longest gestating project in the history of surrey! haven't they been doing pre load for 10-15 years???? any concrete movement on this projects?

I can understand why they'd want to develop there - it's just off the Tilbury interchange of SFPR.
It'd at least add some life to that area in addition to the bowling alley.
The design traffic-wise looks fairly decent, one of the few I've seen here to feature right turn lanes I'm not sure about that downgrade of Scott Rd to 2 lanes from 3 southbound in that area though...

Jim pattison outpatient centre

Can't find the Outpatient Hospital thread so here we go:

Quote:
JIM PATTISON OUTPATIENT CENTRE TO OPEN IN 100 DAYS (it's more like 80 days now)

SURREY – Representatives from the Province and Fraser Health started a 100-day countdown to the opening of its newest health centre today by announcing a brand new name, launching a $10-million fundraising campaign by the Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation.

The new centre will be named the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre to honour noted British Columbian entrepreneur Jim Pattison, who is donating $5 million toward the foundation’s new “100 Days to Give” campaign.

“This is an exciting milestone in health-care delivery here in Surrey,” said Surrey-Tynehead MLA Dave S. Hayer, on behalf of Health Services Minister Colin Hansen. “The new $237-million Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre will take a holistic, patient-centered approach to care. It is wonderful to see this facility receive the support and recognition of leaders in our community.”

Scheduled to open this June, the new Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre will be unique in offering day surgery, diagnostic procedures (such as lab, X-ray, CT and MRI scans, and biopsies) and specialized health programs all within one building. The centre is increasing health-care capacity for residents in Surrey and across the Lower Mainland. Further investment in the Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre is not only creating a better health system for today, but a sustainable future to meet the needs of the rapidly growing community in Surrey and surrounding areas.

Following Jim Pattison’s announcement, the Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation launched its “100 Days to Give” campaign to match Pattison’s $5-million donation by June 1, when the new centre is scheduled to open. The total $10 million in donations will provide more resources, equipment and technology to enhance quality of care and attract leading physicians and clinicians to work at the new outpatient centre and at Surrey Memorial Hospital.

“This region has seen such tremendous development in recent years,” noted Pattison. “I am pleased to be able to join this community effort to attract new doctors by purchasing medical equipment.”

“Coast Capital is committed to investing in innovation within our communities, and this centre is going to add great benefit,” said Coast Capital Savings president and CEO Tracy Redies, who is also a Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation board member. “We have contributed $500,000 to the campaign and I am looking to other Fraser Valley businesses to step up and demonstrate the importance of private sector support for health care.”

The Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre was developed to deliver the right care in the best place for the patient. “By consolidating outpatient services together within one building, we are not only providing better service for our patients, but we can also provide faster diagnosis, reduced wait times and improved health outcomes,” said Dr. Nigel Murray, president and CEO of Fraser Health. “This new centre is an example of how Fraser Health is taking innovative steps to re-engineer how we deliver services. We are really excited to open our doors to the public this June.”

Part of the 100-day countdown announcement included the launch of a video about the health services to be available at the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre and the start of “a fact-a-day” about the Centre on Fraser Health’s website, www.fraserhealth.ca. As a regional facility, residents of the entire Lower Mainland will be able to access and benefit from its services. Outpatients are individuals who receive medical care or treatment, including surgery, but do not require an overnight stay in a hospital.

Funding for capital projects provided by the Province is in addition to the more than $2 billion provided to Fraser Health by the Province each year to meet the health-care needs in the region’s rapidly-growing communities. In addition, a new emergency department and critical care tower for Surrey Memorial Hospital is commencing construction this year. The emergency department is expected to open in 2013, with the tower component anticipated to open in 2014.

The Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre is a public-private partnership between Fraser Health and BC Healthcare Solutions (BCHS). BCHS is responsible for the design, building, financing and maintenance of the facility. Fraser Health will retain ownership of the facility and provide all health and medical services.

Over the next three years, British Columbia’s health-care system will benefit from investments such as new medical equipment and modernized health facilities as part of a $2.5-billion health sector capital plan.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-co...-surrey-memorial-hospital-expansion.html

B.C. Premier Christy Clark was in Surrey this morning to launch the province's largest-ever health-care project – the $512-million expansion of Surrey Memorial Hospital.

Clark said the project will add a new eight-storey critical care tower and a new emergency room five times larger than the existing one, as well as renovating the existing facility. Construction on the expansion actually began in January and is expected to wrap up in 2014.

"It's going to be huge. The second-biggest hospital - when this is done - in British Columbia is going to be right here in Surrey as it should be because this is where the population is growing," she said.

Surrey's rapid population growth has made hospital overcrowding a large problem for the Fraser Health Authority. Recently, the Royal Columbia Hospital in nearby New Westminster had to use its Tim Hortons as an emergency room because of a shortage of ER beds.

can I get a GO CLARK GO?
