I heard today that the Pantages Theatre on East Hastings near Main is about to be demolished... anyone know?

For those who don't know, it's one of Western Canada's oldest theatres, currently in disrepair... I support the redevelopment of the adjacent buildings but the theatre should be restored...

yeah I heard that. there were efforts to refurbish it but while they were trying to get funding together the building envelop was compromised. Water flooded in, totally destroying the interior. If I remember correctly the damage was caused by people dropping parking metres from an adjacent building trying to get the change out of them. How's that for neighbours.

As of Thursday. they are going through the buildings attached to the theatre, removing any salvageable materials in prep for demolition...

There were rumours of a very recent proposal to salvage it but the deal was yanked with the delay to the HAHR.
I heard another rumour as well that the delay is causing great distress to the budget site as it's mortgaged to the hilt.
Not sure how much truth there is to the rumours but if valid it shows how much damage is being caused by these unreasonable delays. Real buildings are getting lost as are peoples shirts.

Anyways back to better news. Someone had mentioned a possible new Apple flagship store. Now I don't know if this is it or not, but it's a possible site. The brochure mentions a sizeable amout of space but only a very small amount is available for lease hinting that a large amount is already spoken for. Retail isn't my forte at all, but hopeful someone here can shed some light on this. I've tried to attach the brochure but not sure if this is going to work. Whatever the tenants ends up being, it will certainly be a nice addition to Royal Centre.

Glass, street entrance, spiral staircase inside, central location = apple flagship

I don't know if any other ones have a restaurant patio above them, but I'm not sure that it matters either

yes, that plaza has been a no mans land since the tower was first built. Will bring some life to Georgia st. At least I don't think crazy West end network people will try to stop this. See that nut bar from WEN, with his standby crew to stop the deomotion of st john'schurch in todays province. What a jerk, now if it was Holy Rosary or St Andrews Wesley, but seriously dude. Its not a historic building. Talk about trying to be on a power trip.

I live right around the corner from St. John's. It's fugly. I think that some of these — NIMBY protesters have a pathological aversion to any kind of change, something more akin to a mental illness or phobia rather than a rational belief system.

Thanks for the Royal Centre update...looks good!

Highly doubtful that's where Apple would wind up. They don't like to be at all isolated...much prefer to be amongst other brand streetfront stores. I think if the right opportunity had opened up on Robson, they'd be there already...

Apple does place stores, especially flagship ones, in the heart of CBD's. This is one such location. In addition, there are high end hotels, Coal Harbour, the West End, Burrard Station, cruise ships, tourists, all nearby. Yes, Pacific Centre is close, but it is a cramped store with no street presence. This location would be able to pull in a lot of people with readily disposable income.

My certainty is growing that this is the location of which my friend spoke. We were on lower Robson and he motioned north and east of there, which fits. The glass box and especially the design of that stairwell, within the retail store itself, are such strong clues.

Sorry to quell any rumours, but Apple has not done a deal here. I wouldn't read too much into the glass-box design. The space Jlousa posted is seeking tenants, and is available for pre-lease. I'm not saying Apple wouldn't lease the Georgia CRU frontage, but for a variety of reasons, it's unlikely. Think Robson.
