Up to 6.2 million square feet of office space could be constructed in central Ottawa if every vacant lot and surface parking lot was developed, city staff say in a new report.

That space could accommodate 30,000 employees and is the rough equivalent of another dozen office towers the size of the new Export Development Canada headquarters, currently under construction at the corner of O’Connor and Slater streets.

Once that tower is completed later this year, there will be 17.8 million square feet of office space in central Ottawa, by the city’s count.

I wonder if with the downtown tunnel we'd see more of the sites east of the canal be developed?
