My personal preference is for Los Angeles over Montreal. But thats totally subjective and as far as the numbers go they rank equally even though Montreal doesnt have a supertall or even a couple buildings over 200 meters.

I think we're talking about different things. The Toronto chest thumpers are thinking of the future, while everyone else is looking at the now. Like how many buildings over 150 meters are there NOW.

There is no way to ascertain a skyline like Tokyo: the buildings simply go on practically for ever.

Besides, Toronto still does not have a supertall.

Oh, and I would compare Toronto to Montreal (yes, the skyline of the former beats the latter), long before I would compare it to the much more impressive skylines of Chicago, NY. TO is simply not in that league. Perhaps in 10 years, but not now. Nope.

Take a look at Shanghai, and try to tell me that Toronto can compare. There is just no way. I don't give two shits what silly Forbesian-style lists from Emporis say.

If Toronto gets a supertall, then it might qualify for the big leagues. Sure there's a lot of construction there right now, but sorry to say but only the numbers are impressive... there's no building over 300m going up now or any time soon.

Well there isnt too much happening on the construction side. At least in North America. Might as well fast forward until these cities get their acts together. People wanna see construction.

150 meters is for little girls.. Lets play over 200 meters

Chicago - 31
Toronto - 17
Shanghai - 41
Vancouver - 1
Montreal - 2 ?
Calgary - 2 ( a full two no cheater spires)
Hong Kong - 36
New York - 69

Hong Kong, Shanghai and Chicago are closer to Toronto than they are to New York.

Toronto is closer to Chicago than it is to either Montreal or Calgary.

Toronto should therefore be compared to Chicago and Hong Kong
Montreal should go up against Calgary and Vancouver

No doubt, and I'm impressed how you changed the rules of the discussion. But wouldn't you get a more accurate representation through a smaller number, like 150 Meters? In my humble opinion, Toronto doesn't look anywhere near as skyscraperish as Hong Kong, Shanghai, even Chicago.

Everytime someone from Toronto brags about their city, the Leafs lose a game.
The Data proves it over the last 4 decades, so I must be right.

Thank you! someone agrees with me too... Now not to say, Toronto's skyline is not impressive of course but again forget about comparing it to all those cities mentioned. I don't understand why HEIGHT is the main focus here....Isn't it pretty much about the density and how many skyscrapers it actually has??.... YES YES calgary has a lot more tall buildings than MTL but in terms of buildings in the downtown core MTL kills Calgary. There are just too many in MTL.. again same for Toronto and Hong Kong but on a different scale of course or Chicago, NYC...forget it! Toronto is on its own in my opinion... maybe in a few years we will see how things turn out. NO ARGUMENTS! its just my opinion...im not bashing any city!!!!

200m is for little boys.

300m is for the big boys. Until Toronto gets one it will keep getting made fun of.

I agree with this sentiment.

Towers built or U/C over 100 metres (according to SSP database):

Shanghai: 709
New York: 695
Hong Kong: 598
Chicago: 297
Toronto: 189
Los Angeles: 69
Calgary: 56
Vancouver: 49
Montreal: 43
Seattle: 40

Seems to me that in terms of sheer scale Calgary/Montreal/Vancouver are to Toronto what Toronto is to New York/Hong Kong/Shanghai.

Guy, did you forget about the CN Tower which is 500 Meters plus.

It's not invisble you know.

Everyone seems to quick to discount it. It's the major defining mark of our skyline and is over five times as tall as anything in your home town.

Also, using your metric Toronto is really close to Chicago.

Montreal, Vancouver, and Calgary are basically on the exact same plane despite the differences in population.

CN Tower is not a building. Plain and simple.

It's a compliment to a city's skyline, not a core feature.

Come on, the CN Tower isn't a core feature of the cities skyline? If it wasn't for the CN Tower Toronto would hardly be known outside of Canada. The CN Tower is the defining feature of the skyline imo

How about First Canadian Place with its cheater spire going 355 meters?

hey, are you serious about the CN Tower not being a core feature? Its the most recognized landmark in the City of Toronto.

People really like to pick on FCP falling 2 meter short of Supertall status. Its a shame that its only 99.33333333333333333333% of supertall status.
