Car dealerships take up a lot of space. I wonder if a dealership could put their cars in a multi-level parking garage (instead of giant lots) and sell some extra land. This probably wouldn't happen though, because how would a dealership benefit from this unless land is very valuable?

There are a couple of dealerships out here in DC that have cars parked in a multi-story garage. In some ways, it is almost better for the dealership in that to know where the cars you want to see are you have to talk to a salesman. Although, that might deter some buyers....

I remember hearing last summer that Deseret News was laying off several people, and would be moving their offices to the Triad Center. I guess there they could integrate with KSL, and I have noticed reporters from the DN shown on KSL-TV every now and again, but has the DN completely moved out of their building yet? Does anyone know the plans for the building? Sorry I'm a Southern Utahn, I never get up to SLC, and was just wondering.

There were people moving out of the building last time I went inside (few months ago) and the elevators were lined with padding. I haven't noticed anyone walk in or out of the building since then.

This totally bums me out. What is to become of this building?

I guess the entire upper half of that block with the Deseret News building is going to be up for some serious redevelopment after City Creek Center opens.

Shouldn't we be finding out more about the new Broadway Theatre plans soon?

I think it's beautiful and it's a fairly new building. I'd hate to see it demolished.

The print media is a tough game but everyone wants their news. It is not a video / TV news but a real news. that hybrids video and print.

There is something that is way cool about print AND I am allergic to inks.

The tactile feeling of holding something that delivers stories, facts, un facts, plagiarized morphed and basically hopes it so important. None of us are stupid, we can understand the made up and real truth. Reading the bogus from the reality is a wonderful past time.

I have the on cable etc focus of O'Reiliy versus whomever...and vice versa. It is hilarious hilarious.

The sad thing is the USA combining fro a discourse that involves everyone. The Conservatives are to focused on the tight wing truth...the Liberal are focused on the left wing truth...I mean how much does it have to take for all to work together. F politics...go for reality.

My life is fine and I am lucky but I want to see an F'ing meeting without anything but the agenda stepping out of the shadow.

I think they're talking about two different buildings..

The Deseret News building was built some time in the '90s from the ground up, as you said.

The Montgomery Ward/Bennion Jewelers building (what I think he's talking about) is quite old, but was remodeled/butchered in the '90s.

Sad news for Trolley Square. the company I work for, has decided to close its store at Trolley. The store was the first in Utah, and has been a staple at the mall for over twenty years. Unfortunately the store has not been profitable for years due to the mall not reducing rent, which is more than my store at the Gateway. Its last day open was last Thursday, I have been helping them box everything up for the last couple days. This isn't a reflection of the company's business in the market, my store at Gateway, our Fashion Place store and both our stores in the airport had record years this last year. In fact we were all in the top 10 stores in the company, mine at #1 of coarse.

It seems as though quite a few stores have left Trolley Square because of increased rents. Some of my favorites are not there anymore. It's too bad because it used to be one of my favorite places to take friends when they came for a visit from out of town. Hopefully the Pub (I still call it the pub) will stay for a while longer as well as the Spaghetti Factory.

1. Is tower 8 in CCC still supposed to be over 375'? That's what the first renderings showed.

Governor Herbert just announced a creation of a World Trade center to be located in Downtown SLC in his State of the State address.

Maybe this is becoming more of a reality...

I hope Becker wins this one. Losing a gravel pit mine along Beck Street would be fantastic! We have plenty of other hills to rape far from viewing distance of our Airport and downtown locations or any other place in Utah where human beings make as their dwelling places. Let's just do a gravel pit along I-80 headed towards the Utah-Nevada border; that would make it fast enough for hauling the stuff into town and it would make for a more interesting drive along one of America's most desolate distances to drive a vehicle.

Becker sues to stop Beck Street gravel business

Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker is suing his city’s own Board of Adjustment for reversing a ban on sand-and-gravel excavation conducted by a Beck Street trucking company.

The suit, filed this week in 3rd District Court, also names the Ralph Smith Trucking Co. and the 1320 N. Beck St. property owner. It calls on the court to reverse the board’s Dec. 23, 2010, ruling and asks that the trucking company’s ability to extract sand and gravel from the bench be denied.

“Ralph Smith Trucking cannot now argue that it is entitled to claim a nonconforming use for sand-and-gravel extraction when it neglected to appeal the very same issue in 2005,” the lawsuit reads.

On Dec. 29, 2005, the city sent the trucking company a zoning-violation notice, noting the rule was enacted “to maintain the life, health, safety and general welfare” of residents.

The time period to appeal “has now lapsed,” argues Deputy City Attorney Lynn Pace.

Pace notes the city board, composed of volunteer appointees, never addressed the “critical” question of whether the company has a nonconforming legal right to excavate. The only means to get a final answer, he says, is to go to a judge. “If we’re right in this argument, they don’t have the right to go dig up the hillside.”

In April 1995, the hillside property was rezoned as open space, while the flat area adjacent to Beck Street was rezoned to light manufacturing. Both outlaw mining.

But sand-and-gravel extraction has continued uninterrupted at the site since the 1995 rezoning “and for decades before,” argues Bruce Baird, attorney for the trucking company.

The veteran city business doesn’t want its rights stripped “for no good reason,” he says.

“We are saddened that the city continues to waste taxpayer monies on this futile effort to deprive this legitimate business of its right to operate on its property,” Baird adds. “We’re confident that the court will sustain this Board of Adjustment decision.”

In July 2008, the city’s zoning administrator ruled the properties at 1320 N. Beck St. did “not enjoy a legal nonconforming mining and excavation use.”

After that notice, the trucking company appealed. The matter was heard by the Board of Adjustment twice in 2009 and again last November. Last month, the board concluded the company had used the property for “extractive industry uses” from before 1995 through the present.

“The city has failed to demonstrate the abandonment of that extraction use,” the board ruled. In reversing the 2008 ban, the board did not address the company’s failure to appeal in 2005.

A hearing before Judge Tyrone Medley has yet to be scheduled.
