Victoria's Secret has its "coming soon" signage posted on the construction wall inside Chinook. Located by the GAP Store. It says opening Spring 2011.

7 for all Mankind is moving into the space next to Mexx on the upper level of Chinook's new wing. This place is really hauling in the big names...and after the Tiffany & Co. announcement, nothing would shock me at this point.

target has many two level stores in the states and many attached to malls not so many upscale ones but they do exist

i read that walmart wants 60 Zellers locations

I wonder if it's possible the Westbrook Walmart could take the Westhills Zellers store, and the Staples/Nevada Bobs/Micheals block and turn it into a Supercentre? This would get them out of Westbrook, which could see a redevelopment down the road for TOD.

Then again, I would have to think Walmart would want to be part of the TOD plan as well.

Westbrook Wal-Mart isn't going anywhere, they just renewed their lease for another ten years with an option to renew for a further ten years. And Wal-Mart faced with redevelopment threats just buys out the entire site.

Wal-Mart has actually become a pretty large commercial landlord in their efforts to fight off redevelopment, when a store is faced with redevelopment - they just buy out the entire development. There is a poor bastard at J.C. Penny who has to write Wal-Mart a rent cheque every month because Wal-Mart is their landlord.

A few stores have pulled out of CrossIron Mills over the past few weeks.

Interesting how Walmart has become the large conglomerate in recent years.
It will be a challenge to redevelop the Westbrook site, that's for sure..

Any notable ones that have pulled out? I think the only notable one that I have noticed is Liz Claibourne. Most were one of a kind stores I think that were local...

I go up to CIM every now and then just to check out the progress they are making. I think they've done a really great job on the entertainment wing. It actually feels nice in there. It's what I think should have been done to the rest of the mall. Each neighborhood could have used more treatment on the storefronts. But I suppose they will change in time as tenants change anyways.

I've noticed they've taken out the awkward seating feature just outside the Guess store.. didnt really make much sense to put the seating in the middle of a narrow hall like that.

I feel the Foodcourt should have been placed in the middle where the customer service booth area currently is. But I suppose supply loading is the reason why they chose to put it off to the side (there's a lot of connected loading halls behind the food kiosks).

The interior of CIM was designed to be gimmicky from the get go.. it was to draw people out there to see something "different". In time, I'm sure the gimmicky elements will be removed/changed altogether. The CMI we see today won't be the same CIM we see in the next 10 years.

La Maison Simons from Quebec City is opening their first store outside of the province of Quebec at West Edmonton Mall. It will be 100,000 sq ft. They are also looking at locations in Vancouver and Toronto.
I would think Chinook, or Southcentre or Market Mall would be good for them in Calgary. If Target doesn't want the Zellers location in Chinook, then Simons would be perfect as a replacement.
They are a somewhat upscale fashion clothing retailer.
The Simons family, Scottish immigrants, have been in business for 5 generations in Quebec City and have locations in Montreal and elsewhere in the province.

For sure Simon's would be a better fit in Chinook than Target would be, given the demographics. And the Zeller's location would suit perfectly!

Article from today's Herald. It would appear that WEM is doing a major reno and remodel. I find it really interesting that someone from the UofA school of retailing and business would suggest that this is something that doesn't need to be done. Nothing says DATED like WEM, it screams 1980s

Kyle Murray, director of the school of retailing at the University of Alberta school of business, said West Edmonton Mall is enjoying success even without redevelopment.

“I don’t think they had to do it,” Murray said.

He's not saying don't do it because the mall looks fine. He's saying despite the dated look the mall is still a big attraction.

He also says this:

“I think they’re still leaders in Canada, if not the world, in driving traffic, but at the same time retail evolves and you don’t want to sit back.”

Yeah I read that, but I took it as they didn't have to renovate because they still are able to drive traffic.

Nonetheless, it will be nice to see that mall modernized I hope they don't do somethng cheesy

It's WEM. How could they not do something cheesy.

True story: When I was a lad growing up in Edmonton, I and a buddy walked down Calgary trail applying at all the hotels and restaurants. When we were at the CI South Hotel, a greasy little man overheard us asking about work. He approached us and said if we wanted to work that we should go to WEM and ask for Pat in the admin office.

Turns out the greasy guy was one of the Ghermezian brothers. Turned out to be an awesome job for a teenager. We used to have Ben Hur style charriot races in the back halls using wheelchairs. On Sundays we would get there early and take quarters out of the fountains and hang out in the arcade with our Supervisor all day.

One quick story, Pappa Ghermezian was still alive and not all there. He couldn't comprehend that his boys just owned the mall and not all the stores. He was constantly getting busted for walking out of stores with merchandise.

Loblaws is opening 4 more Joe Fresh clothing stores this year, 3 of the 4 are in the Toronto area, and the one that isn't is at Cross Iron Mills according to the Calgary Sun.
