haha, well I feel extremely dumb. For some reason I was thinking Westmorland was on the West side, I guess with reading previous comments on how the AQ looks like it's closing and other comments I thought everyone was talking about Fairvale Blvd. Next time I will remember to read more closely.

Looks good. Is this just the first building? How many floors will it be from the Prince William side?

Yes it is the first building Its 9 from Water street, but has a peaked roof kinda so it's more like 10 from water and 7/8 from PW Street.

Sounds like it will be really nice. The first building was completely sold out, correct? Maybe once it is built, it will help sales of the second building.

Last I checked there were still a few units available, mostly smaller 1 bedroom condos on the Prince William side. But yes hopefully the second phase goes forward, the development will look a lot better with a second tower to even it out.

Port of Saint John Exceeds 30 Million Metric Tonnes of Cargo in Single Year
January 20, 2011

(Saint John, N.B.) The Port of Saint John exceeded 30 million metric tonnes of cargo in a single year for the first time ever in 2010.

Cargo statistics released today by Saint John Port Authority show traffic recovery was experienced in majority of
sectors through the year. A 13% increase in total port traffic was experienced with tonnage reaching 30,500,000 metric tonnes.

Significant increases of close to 3 million metric tonnes in petroleum products and close to 650,000 metric tonnes (largely in dry bulk) contributed to breaking the record for total traffic.

These increases are reassuring after a dampened economy in 2008 led to significant decreases in cargo movements during 2009.

In the cruise sector 2010 was also a record breaking year as the number of cruise guests welcomed here surpassed 200,000 in a single year. This was a Port Authority milestone originally projected to be reached by 2015. Last year close to 205,900 passengers and 77,000 crew members called on Saint John between June and October, a 10 % increase over the previous year. In addition, 2010 was also the year the Port hosted its 1.5 millionth cumulative cruise guest.

“Joining the Port Authority in late September of 2010, I was fortunate to arrive at a time that was full of opportunity.
Today we see positive gains in cargo recovery for 2010 and continuing growth in cruise, but we also see the Port Authority and its many partners strengthening working relationships to bring greater prosperity to the region via our shared asset of the Port of Saint John,” enthused Jim Quinn, President & CEO of Saint John Port Authority. “It is only by working together as a community that we can ‘raise our game’ and continue to reap the benefits that having a piece of national infrastructure of this scale in Saint John will bring.”

The Port of Saint John contributes $375 million in GDP for Saint John and $425 for the Province of New Brunswick as a whole and is essential to many of New Brunswick’s major industries engaged in international trade. The Port provides deep-water, ice-free access to shipping year round. The Saint John Port Authority is a commercially viable, self-sufficient government business enterprise facilitating maritime trade by administering a critical component of the region’s transportation infrastructure.

For comparison, Halifax's overall tonnage through the port in 2010 was down 1.3 per cent to 9.5 million tonnes in 2010 from 9.6 million tonnes in 2009. It's not exactly fair to compare the two because SJ's tonnage advantage is mostly raw materials like crude oil and potash, whereas Halifax gets much more cargo and container traffic, but it's still interesting to see.

Good to see.......

I'm glad to see the port being successful. I remember passing through SJ once last summer on the way back from Maine and there were three large cruise ships in port. It was quite a sight to behold

It would be good if some form of decent cruise ship facility could be built at Long Wharf as well.

Thought you guys may be interested in where they are building the 8 new store fronts at McAllister Place with before and after pics.

And a picture of the approved plans for the 4 towers consisting of 600-800 condos on the westside. It's a crappy picture. But better than nothing right? lol

did I miss something?? since when are there 4 towers/600-800 condo units planned for the west side? The site plan sortof looks like a subsidized housing project with very simplistic building footprints. I hope they're not just uninteresting low-rise boxes. I find it funny that considering SJ has such a rich architectural history that many of the buildings built since the 60's are cheap and utilitarian. It would be nice to see some new buildings with curves, curtain wall and higher quality materials.

lol It's not a subsidized housing project. They are 12 stories each.

Looking at the plan, you can see the 4 L shaped footprints of the towers, each pair designed to 'interlock' together.

I wish Freddy would start getting some of those taller condo plans. Oh well, I'll make due with the one I'm buying on the North side for now.

It may not be subsidized, but it does look like a housing project though. This kind of condo development, though it could be great for the West Side, needs to be more central to take advantage of existing neighbourhood amenities and public transportation, not be further removed from the urban core
