They should cover the whole entrance plaza instead of leaving it open like that. They don't seem to realise that most of the year a plaza is a windy cold damp rainy freezing uninviting unpleasant place.

I've observed on the bus headed to and from work this week that that Iron/Steel work is up to around the 4th floor, and concrete forming and pouring is upto the 2nd of 3rd floor in some parts of the jobsite...

Aecon is constructing this building. Today Aecon reported some big financial losses due to problems with a Suncor project in the oil sands that Aecon is working on.

It made me think of the problems they have had with the foundation of this building. It was put about six months behind schedule because of unexpected problems with the soil and rock formations at the site.

I assume overcoming the problems has raised the cost of the project. Does Aecon have to absorb the added costs or does the university/province have to come up with more money? I suppose it depends on the wording of the contract they have.

In short.... no.
The rock issues were an unforeseen condition, AECON will pass their cost along with appropriate markups for overhead and profit directly to the university.

If it were a design build, then it would be on AECON, but i don't believe this one was.

I think it's going to be a pretty tall building when it's done...the floor heights appear to be a lot larger than the adjacent buildings...

Interesting. The university web site says the tower part will be 15 stories while the Aecon site says it is 16 stories.Maybe Aecon is including a utilities structure on top while the uni is not. I hope that when they get up there they can agree on how tall it is supposed to be.--

Looking at the crane's height, I think this thing will look pretty dominant when complete. There won't be much difference in height between it and the residences, but the design of the tower is going to be quite eye-catching.

Worker rescued from university construction site

Updated: Mon May. 30 2011 4:09:11 PM

ctvottawa.ca

A 21-year-old male worker was sent to hospital after he was rescued from a highrise building under construction at the University of Ottawa on Monday.

Paramedics say the worker suffered a sudden back injury at the construction site at about 9:10 a.m.

The man hurt his back while he was on the top level of the seven-storey structure, and rescue crews had to use ladders to get to him. The injury is apparently not related to the work he was doing, according to paramedics.

The man was stabilized and lowered to the ground by a crane and rescue basket.

He was transported to hospital where he was listed in stable condition.

Campus Construction

Not sure if this is the best place to post, but some more development on the University Campuses (Carleton and uOttawa)

From uOttawa
Quote:
The Government of Ontario has also announced a contribution of $30 million to the project as part of Building Together, a long-term infrastructure plan that will create jobs, strengthen the economy and help communities of all sizes meet the needs of local families in the province.

“This investment by the Ontario government will undoubtedly contribute to giving our students the best education for success. This new addition to our vibrant campus will be a vital resource for the entire University of Ottawa community,” said Allan Rock, University of Ottawa president.

The renovated Morisset Library will greatly enhance the quality of student life and will create a better learning environment.for students. The project will add infrastructure for broadcasting lectures and seminars online, with ten innovative multimedia classrooms.

“This plan continues to build on the province’s infrastructure investments by providing us with a road map for the next decade. We know that infrastructure is an asset worth investing in and maintaining for the good of everyone,” said Bob Chiarelli, Ontario minister of infrastructure.

According to the plans, two floors will be added to the library extension and the entire façade will be replaced (see picture). All told this will double the study space available to students, as well as create new facilities such as a digital media centre.

Nice! Morisset is probably the ugliest uottawa building today.

Edit: shoot, I thought it was Morisset that was getting a facade replacement... :/

Owww. I like the Morisset expansion into the unicentre. That is an ugly area of campus right now that doesn't flow right.

I also love the new entrance out on the main pedestrian mall running from Academic Hall to the new Vanier Tower.

--and with the very ugly parking lot behind the original Vanier Building gone, the heart of the campus should improve even more.

It's awesome how fast this has started rising now...I think it's at it's 10th floor, with only 5 left to go until topout. Funny thing is, it's already almost as tall as the buildings beside it, which have a higher floorcount...
