The salt/snow argument is spurious. Every city in Canada (save perhaps the lower mainland and Southern Vancouver Island) experiences snow/ice and the concomitant snow removal efforts.

I used to live a couple blocks from these things and thought about them as soon as I found out about this thread. Why is this ugly design being replicated... Someone had a look at one of those completed buildings and actually thought: "I think we're on to something"
Yikes! The "clock tower" is an especially nice touch. Shades of the Abraj Al-Bait in Mecca, no? I'm always amazed by how depressing Montreal's suburbs are in relation to the central city. I suppose its that classic story of "so close and yet so far..."

It always disappoints me on how architects and developers have such potential to create and develop really nice buildings, but instead we end up with a plain box or they cheap out on the materials or both.
Developer: "Second Empire architecture is beautiful. But... what if we made it 32 storeys tall, and added huge balconies!!"
Architect: "YES!!! And instead of brick, we will use stucco for the façade!!"

I can see that clock building very clearly from my friends 16th floor apartment on sherbrooke street which is about, 13km away give or take. Theres literally nothing around that building to block its view. It just stands there, dominating its surroundings with its ugliness.

Besides Ile des Soeurs, thats pretty much what highrise development looks like in our suburbs, except its usually shorter and just as ugly. Do we even have a single glass tower outside of IDS and the core? I honestly can't think of one.
^That Laval Clock tower is as ugly as Longueuil's skyline. Which I thought was an impossible thing to match.

It's purpose built to house people but yes, I am pretty sure it is a condo. We have a lot of very ugly condos here, I am surprised that people are willing to pay almost $200,000 for them.
Goddammit suburban Quebec, Stop It! I know you might feel the need to compensate for the architectural quality of the inner cities... but it's really not necessary.
I vote the entire Oxford/Wonderland intersection in London, Ontario. I'm out of the city right now, but Google Maps will gladly provide you a view of our urban planning mistakes.
There are also some god awful apartment buildings going up just south of me on Adelaide at Kipps Lane. I'll grab some photos when I'm back later this week.
