On the way downtown this afternoon I noticed they started putting up the roof arches (not sure if there is a better name or not) for the Sunalta station. One was up and a crane was raising the 2nd. Sorry, no pics. It looked pretty cool though.

The "prairie grass" cladding has started to go up on the parkade at 69th st. Look pretty cool to me but my wife called it an eyesore. I will see if I can get some pics

A pile-driver is on site, and has already put in most of the piles (brown steel elements sticking out of the ground) that the building will sit on.

Just passed by Sunalta Station. There are more of the arches up and I'd say that the tilted oval design is noticeable.

Might go take some photos later, but no promises.

Here's a document I found on the westlrt.ca site with some details about the 69th Street Parkade.

- CBE administration will use the lowest floor of the parkade and have 250 stalls, with an entrance of 69th Street. That part will open for their use by the time the school year starts in the fall of 2011.

- Calgary Transit patrons will use the rest of the parkade, 750 stalls, with an entrance off 17th Avenue controlled by a traffic light.

- Some intermittent LEDs will be used as part of the design, more on that in the link below

i think the ellipse supports are going to really enhance the user experience in the stations.For one, the low side is North and high side south, which will help orient the user continually along the line. what are your thoughts

As far as I remember the new Science Centre will be opening fall/winter 2011 north of the Zoo. But according to this page the city seems to be going out of their way to preserve access to the old Science Centre. There are even renderings of what the entrance by the West LRT line will look like by 2012 (after the new building opens!!!). What is the future of the old Science Centre building? I had originally thought it was going to be demolished after the new one opened but now I don't know...

There never have been any plans to demolish the old facility, and its likely going to be repurposed for civic or arts use of some sort (ideas toted around have included an art gallery, such as the Glenbow's one thats currently really short of space)

It would make sense for it to become an art gallery. It is certainly a funky space that is well located. Beyond that it is an iconic building for sure.

There is a new newsletter up on the westlrt.ca. Gives updates on all station areas as well as upcoming traffic impacts.

Probably the two biggest of note are:

- Nightly closures of Sarcee Trail between Bow Trail and 17th Avenue for about 10 days to accommodate deliver and installation of girders for the Sarcee Trail/17th Avenue interchange. This will happen sometime in February.

- Closure of 14th Street between 9th and 11th Avenues SW, as well as exit from eastbound Bow Trail to 10th Avenue SW. This is being done to accommodate utility work and will be in effect for about a week in late January and early February.

Overall looks like things are progressing very will considering the weather. Sorry for the lack of photo updates from me lately as I haven't been on the project much lately.

I think the site has potential as a new Central Library - some clever design can integrate the current building into a Library complex.

The current Telus World of Science building is architecturally interesting and would make a great central library space, if it weren't for its small size of approximately 38,000 sq. ft. I don't know if there's space to expand the building on the site or not, but if so, I wonder if the City has considered that site for the new library.

If unsuitable for that, it could also be a contender for a replacement art gallery! Is it right sized for that use?
